109. Okay, I have to respond to this, I'm sorry. I understand where you're coming from; I really, honestly do understand your feelings. I felt the same way for a while. But there is a huge, other side to this that needs to be understood.

Yes, it's wrong to judge people based on their beliefs. I personally don't care if someone believes in Xenu or anything else Scientology preaches. It's not the belief that bothers me; it's not the belief that should bother anyone, no matter how "crazy" it might sound.

The problem is that Scientology is a manipulative, dangerous cult. It sucks people in, brainwashes them, disconnects people from any outside influence that might convince them to leave, goes to great lengths to suppress and harass people who speak against Scientology, and once you're in, they make it incredibly difficult to get out. They do this in a deceitful way, starting with "Dianetics," and don't reveal any of the strange stuff until people are so far in they'll believe anything they're fed.

And Scientology requires money of its members. A lot of money. As a matter of fact, that's the whole point of Scientology, according to its founder: "I'd like to start a religion. That's where the money is!" (and other quotes to that effect). This is why people choose not to support celebrities that are known Scientologists. Because the money that goes to them will go to the "church," and they will use it to hurt more people in the name of making money.

And finally, these celebrities act as mouthpieces for Scientology. Because they are valuable to the cult, they're treated better than the rest. They get perks. And they draw new people in.

The reason people cite the Xenu story and talk about how crazy it is is because... yeah. It is crazy. There's nothing wrong with believing it, honestly and truly, but how many people do you think would actually convert to a religion that told them that up front? And that's the point -- telling people what Scientology is about, getting rid of their ignorance so it can't be exploited, protecting people before they get in too deep.

I'm sorry to rant at you. I know exactly where you're coming from. But this isn't about belief; it's about protecting people from a cult that will trap them and hurt them, and keeping them from gaining the resources to hurt more people. I only write this much so that you can understand a little better.

Someone already linked it, but check out http://www.xenu.net if you want more detail and facts, rather than my vague summary.

The celebrities were sucked in as much as anybody else, though. If you really believe Scientology is a dangerous cult then the members, celebrities included, should be viewed as victims.

You can be a victim yourself and also be a major player in harm being caused to other people. The celebrities giving money to scientology are cosseted from the worst of the cult, and in some cases that ignorance is difficult to excuse.

However, for the moment, let's excuse it. Then just as the 'church' uses its celebrity members as positive advertising, is it not morally incumbant upon those who feel strongly that Scientology is dangerous to use the same opportunities (by which I mean conversations about celebrities as scientologists) to speak out?

Sure, but I feel that when you're speaking out, you have to be very internally consistent - if it's a cult, then the people who are caught up in it don't deserve scorn, even if they have been drawn into the trap and used to attract more followers.

I agree; they are victims. But the secret says "I can't view X the same," not "I hate X" or "I think less of X." It's understandable to view them differently, and since supporting them necessarily means supporting Scientology, it's understandable and reasonable to choose not to do so and to encourage others to do the same.
