Perpetual WIPs

Anyone else have a folder of never-to-be-finished WIPs? Any you particularly regret?

I'm sorry I never finished my Blackadder House crossover.

Yes, quite a few of unfinished WIPs because my muse died. The one I'm saddest I haven't been able to finish is my take on the forging of the One Ring. I had a whole bunch of inspiration, wrote some of it, then work got in the way, then my muse left again. That's the one I most want to finish.

I started writing a sci-fi AU of the early seasons of Supernatural. The Impala was the Winchesters' spaceship. Bobby lived on a junk moon. Humans were the dregs of the galaxy, earth long forgotten and lost. Sam and Dean were traveling the galaxy looking for their father's killer. When Sam dies at the hands of the guilty party, Dean trades himself with a race of aliens who 'collect' him after a year to be mind wiped and sold at the slave markets.

It was a whole thing. I had a lot of fun with it. But in the end I drifted away from SPN and lost my inspiration. So now it haunts my WIP folder instead.

I've watched maybe half a season of Supernatural and I think this sounds awesome.

There are a few from like 25 years ago when Pokemon was the hot new thing. Occasionally a couple of my friends STILL ask if I'm going to finish one of them. I still think it was a good concept, I just didn't know how to get it from the beginning to the ending and stay interesting the whole way.

There are a few from only more like 15 years ago that I would've assumed were going to be perpetual WIPs, but since apparently Vagrant Story is the only fandom I can still write in (I can't seem to focus enough on anything else, whereas these characters basically write themselves), I went back and looked and went "ack - good idea, poor execution" and already started rewriting one of them. Remains to be seen if I'll actually be able to finish the whole 100-200k words that the story would require, so it and the others in that same vein may remain perpetual WIPs after all, but like... I'm trying? :P

Oh oh! And then there was the very long and oddly well received Jim-adopts-a-homeless-Vulcan reboot story. I am not into Kirk/Spock on their own, not to mention the premise was ridiculous and based on a joke my girlfriend made - but my girlfriend wanted me to write it, so during the story I laid some groundwork to bring Bones in later, and started on the sequel almost immediately after. I actually had most of that written, to the point where I just had to connect the "interesting" dots to one another. Then I got sick and I can't concentrate and the brain fog has made me lose most of my vocabulary (never had to use a thesaurus in my life until last year) so it's kinda hard to write Vulcans in particular. :/ But... it's right there. I just need to write some getting from point A to point B and point C.

Oh, yes. :( I was maybe 1/3 of the way through a big epic fic and just lost steam due to health issues and mental health issues, and I've never been able to pick it back up again. I still get complimentary and very nice reviews from people who hope I'll finish, and I hate to disappoint them but I don't want to do a bad job, either.

It was a little obscure to interest many, but I started this PWP-ish fic based on Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters where Mr. Preston is in possession of some damning letters from Cynthia and he makes an agreement with Molly to trade each one for some sort of sexual favor. I'd planned seven letters, starting with a kiss and ramping it up each time.

I try not to and I eventually finish them all when it comes to fics, even if it sucks I just want it to be finished. So not with fics but I've been struggling with other projects A LOT. I used to have a blog so: reviews that were never finished, fanshrines that I really wanted to make, a ship manifesto or two, a lot of art and this one guide that mixes up fandom and school subjects (yeah I wanted to help students so...) to name some. There's probably more, though. Shameful.

I had big plans for a Mystic Messenger fanfic set in a world with elements from Stand Still Stay Silent, and then I got burned out in that fandom. I have so many chapters drafted that will never reach Ao3.

And in the published chapters I haven't even reached this one part I was looking forwards to. Oh well... at least I could probably find a way to repurpose that scene.

And nowadays I'm getting disinterested in Stand Still Stay Silent. So I very much doubt I'll get back to it.

I feel very lucky that, for my Food Fantasy Fanfic, there was so little to be done that leaving the fandom actually HELPED me to finish it.

Get out of my folder, nonny. Get the fuck out! >(

No, but seriously, plenty of stuff I will never release (likely). And at least one fic that is at least 2/3 released but I lost steam and interest after pushing so hard to get it done. 130,000 words and you'd think that was enough to get me going toward the end. Nope.

And now I've got a couple of one-shots roughly 20K each, with one of them I even wrote a sequel's outline for. Goddamnit. That one's been sitting in my folder since 2019, and has been a half-baked idea for half my fic writer "career." Who knows if the first part will even ever be done. The other one-shot is for a different fandom, and I keep running into shit I already want to change before the first draft is done. I wish I could just chill my tits about it already and commit.

I also have outlines for other fic, but stuff I haven't started on. Which is probably a good thing, considering my productivity as of late.

I've got a Steve/Peggy/Bucky PwP fic that's forever going to sit in my drafts because I lost interest in the MCU, and subsequently lost interest in my MCU ships, so I'll never finish it. It's the risk that comes from me starting fic in general sadly: if I don't get it done by the time my attention has drifted from whatever canon I'm into then I'll never finish it, but I also take months to write anything. It's a fun fic-writing issue to have, lmao.

Pretty much everything I've ever written. I always start off so well but then lose steam halfway through, or lose interest in the fandom. I think I'm allergic to finishing WIPs. :(

There is a fanfic I left unfinished 14 years ago and various chapters/re-written chapters made over the years are currently sitting in a folder on my USB stick full of my writing - haunting me every time I go to open up another file to write in.

It's worse when I occasionally go on ffnet to see a new comment asking when it's going to be updated. Even though I feel bad about it, you would think that being left without an update since 2007 would be a clue that it might not update.

*Shoves folder aside and looks around nervously* No, why would you ask such a thing?

Seriously, though, yeah, there's a lot of fics I've started and I keep meaning to get back to. Nothing I can think of that I regret writing, though, no. Could make for a good weekend project, looking through that folder and seeing which ones might spark me to get moving on them again.

I always think i finished my WIPs, but then I realize I never finished my stories, thet just continued on in my head and we all had a great time, the end. Sigh.but there's multiple Wisps, just waiting. But I'm honestly too much of a punk to post anything these days (much less smut), lest it's found and linked to me. Sigh.

I'm working on four stories at the moment.

1) is a sequel to something that's finished and it's got a long way to go and will end up being a huge weird poly fic and I don't even understand how I got there. But it has a character who was treated like shit for most of the first story being a massive asshole and fucking with everyone else for spite and fun and I think that's kind of sexy of him in a 'please stop being so evil no one will like you anymore' kind of way.

2) is an ongoing AU, second in a series of five stories. The next chapter will finish this current story. AND THEN ON TO THE NEXT.

3) is a massive story with 35 chapters so far and no endgame so I could be stuck potentially writing it forever and I don't really mind, I just wish I didn't have to keep making things up as I go along lol.

4) is omegaverse what is my fucking life I will never finish this even though it's the most well-plotted of the four.

X-Men fics from 15 years ago, not gonna go into details.
Saint Seiya fic from almost as long that "just" needs editing and reposting.
I will finish this batch of AUs from 3 years ago someday, though. Soon.
