107. YES YES YES YES. Bad News secret makes me oh so happy. I wish the fandom was bigger too. :(
112. Not uncommon secret is... not uncommon. That fandom has a large and dedicated following, actually.
131. OMFGARGHHHH. *Totally has to watch it in secret because of the same reason*. Become my best friend, PLEASE? I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER AND burn BAKE YOU THINGS.
153. Oh you crazy arse BBC. This secret is so true. And OP is brilliant for voicing it. I pity the writer, who was thrown two different ethnicitys to characters which he had written as purely English. Poor bloke. Or chick. Bird. Girl. Whatever.

153. I don't get why other ethnicities being included is worth pitying?

He's written his first full sitcom, and he's given completely different people to write for.

It must be hard. I'm not be racist, some of my best blacks are friends. I just think that it's hard for a writer to suddenly have to adapt.

I agree there is some truth to this. However, I know fuck-all about how different ethnicities comingle anywhere but where I live, a la Washington DC.

But I can't see the vampire dude being recast. That character just no longer makes sense to me as anyone but himself.

Bah.

Re: 153

Actually, it's not that hard. He's paid to write what he's paid to write. The pilot wasn't even picked up to begin with and the series was only made as a result of grassroots campaigning. The writer will have a 'handler' at the BBC whose job it is to discuss what direction the show will take. It's not like they flung it at his head and said 'write that, bitch'. Writers are often involved in casting choices, so I'm betting he was at least kept in the loop.

Sure thing. So long as your black friends don't have the temerity to claim to be English just because they were born in England, I'm sure you get along just fine.

OMG, exactly

Re: 153

[identity profile] navbar.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
*Shrugs*

I didn't mean it like that, of course, but the interwebs a funny thing for not really getting your point across.

I think you'd find it suprising if you knew my ethnicity. Or how old I was when we emigrated here. Still.

Re: 107, 112, 131, 153.

[identity profile] pourtant.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
There are so many things that have been changed from the original pilot, including tone, backstory and even the personalities of the characters, frankly the ethnicity of the actors must be the least of the writer's worries.

Also,

I'm not be racist, some of my best blacks are friends

lol.

Wanna explain what 'purely English' means? Because Lenora Crichlow is British born. English born, actually. So she is English. I don't see what the problem is.

Your DNA can't be traced anywhere except for that region?

The problem is she was brought on as a token. Which is an insult.

Re: 107, 112, 131, 153.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, please. What does that even MEAN DNA can't be traced anywhere except for there? Are you a eugenecist? You know, don't you that you can trace us ALL back to Africa, originally. Does that make us all Africans? I don't know anyone who doesn't have at least one great grandparent from somewhere not-England. Also? Invaded HOW MANY TIMES? Learn some genetics.

And you know Annie is a token how, exactly?

It couldn't be that she's an incredible actress who was good for the job? So, according to you, all non-white non-English actors on 'English' TV (which doesn't exist, btw, it's British) are token? None of them are hired because they're good for the part? Fuck the fuck off. Annie Riseborough wasn't sacked, she had another job. Lenora Crichlow was who they chose to take over. That is all that happened. Get over yourself.
