It's not fair to assume that the anonsecret!OP doesn't know the difference. And from what I read of the secret, the point was that the Op felt the person a hypocrite. Whether or not the "bashing" meets the correct criteria for bashing is irrelevant. If the supposed hypocrite accuses other people of doing to her favorite character what she does to her least favorite character, then the question is hypocrisy, not if it's truly bashing.

Not the commenter, but I fail to see why people care. So person X hates your favourite character. So don't read anything they write about them, it is not an OMG GIANT MORAL ISSUE.

Also, I think a lot of people are quick to call any criticism at all "bashing" and to decide, if the character they like is a member of a minority group or female, that everyone or nearly everyone who hates the character is being some kind of bigot, even if the character is incredibly unpopular and disliked by most people in the fandom.

SRSLY, I don't care who likes characters I dislike or dislikes characters I like, but can we please not make it a huge political issue?

I think y'all missed the point of the secret.

Basher is bashing, but accusing other people of being bashers when he/she is participating in bashing. It's about hypocrisy, not bashing. Bashing is simply the conduit.

Bashing really isn't usually used in response to criticism. Usually, it's in response to people being vehemently against a character and spouting random crap about how terrible they are, and it sometimes is included in fics when they write it so that canon characters act completely OOC to bring down the character the author hates (IE: Calling Ginny a "whore")

The person the secret is about acts like it is a personal insult when people bash their favorite character (who is the character the fandom is most likely to bash, and I hate it too. I like this character as well) but then turns around and calls a more popular character names and incorporates slams against the more popular character into their fics.

I guess I could buy the indignation about how their favorite is treated if they didn't treat other people's favorite (who isn't even my favorite) the same way.
