Pretty sure they mean sociologist. Psych doesn't deal nearly as much with social issues such as racism, sexism, etc unless it's specifically social psychology, and even then, it's more individual-focused.

To be fair, I didn't actually read the secret. I just saw "fandom armchair sociologist" and was like "eesh, how boring".

It's a really fun major! Fandom culture is very interesting, I agree; I'm just not a huge fan of sociology.

Neither am I, typically. I'm more about ~~how that makes you feel~~ what's going on in people's heads.

Social-Cultural Feminist Psych major sounds a helluva a lot more fun than Cognitive/Abnormal Psych major like me.

I love Abnormal Psych! If it wasn't for that pesky clinical thing, it would have been my major. Sociocultural Feminist Psych is just a fancy name for a bunch of nothing. lol

RL sociology is pretty boring, IMO. So I can only imagine if it was applied in fandom. Now, studying the sociology of fandom sounds interesting.

Um... maybe it's the bio major in me, but is there a difference? I mean, besides one having a preposition.

Damn, I thought my italics-for-emphasis would work. lol

By sociology applied to fandom, I just mean people going into a specific fandom (e.g., Death Note) and applying sociology to it. By the sociology of fandom, I mean sociologist looking at fandom as a whole and how it operates and fits into sociology.

Oh. Well, frankly I think both sound intriguing. Fandom social politics, at least those that I've experienced, are v. different from RL social politics, and that seems v. interesting to explore, as well as fandom as a subculture (especially as it's usually the crazies who surface and give the rest of us a bad (or just weird) name) on the whole.

Yeah, understandable. Most of the social politics that I like to explore within a fandom tends to fall loosely into social psychology. I think I'd be interested to hear what someone (who knows about sociology) would have to say about sociology applied to fandom, but I wouldn't sit around talking about it. Soc was just never my thing.

I mean sociologist. I study it, I know when they're covering it (and when they have nfc what they're talking about because they haven't read any published material).

Ah. Yeah, fandom social scienes in general can be a pain in the ass when people don't do research.

You're a brave soul to venture through sociology. I dropped that as my minor after the first day of classes.

Ah, you probably didn't get to the good stuff then. I was a bit confused that you were differentiating between culture studies and sociology up there - once you get past the base studying of classical theory and research methods, you get into the contemporary stuff, which tends to draw more on philosophy, semiology and culture studies. It's a big mess, really XD

I'm currently taking a 4000 level Soc class in Sex, Gender, and the Feminist Thought for my Sociocultural Feminist Psychology major; but, other than that, I'm guilty of only having Soc 101 under my belt. My friends keep trying to convince me Soc is the way to go since it has a lot in common with Social Psychology (which I love), but I always run for cover when they start up Soc debates. lol
