I know I should chill out, but this secret made me so annoyed. If something is being translated into English, why shouldn't it be translated into (proper) British English? It's just one of many alternate spellings, why should this one bother you so much...

For the record, I love the word "gaol" :D

*shrug* British spellings annoy me, as an American, as much as any other "misspelled" word does. It doesn't annoy all Americans, I'm sure, but it apparently annoys the OP also, just to the extent that they'd stop reading these scanlations.

It's personal preference. And for years (like, until only just recently) I never realized it was an alternate spelling; I thought it was an actually different word, pronounced "gay-ol", along with gaoler, which meant an old-timey jail...

Well I hope you have plenty of sympathy for the poor British folk who have little choice but to put up with American "misspellings" on the web and many other places, while also having to put up with "know-it-all" Americans who feel the need to correct their British spellings.

Of all the stupid things to be annoyed over. Seriously. Grow the fuck up and stop being so ethnocentric. It's people like you that make the rest of us look bad.

I'm not oppressing anyone for it, and I'm not saying anyone should change their spellings to satisfy the few people who can't seem to gloss over different spellings between different Englishes. I was simply saying that I understand where the OP is coming from, because it throws me off to see spellings different from what I'm used to (especially words like, as the OP mentioned, "gaol" which I hardly EVER see, as opposed to something much more common like favourite or colour). As I see it, I'm allowed to be thrown off by seeing spellings I don't use -- the same way as I'd be thrown off seeing someone spell their name "Hilarie" or "Johnne" or some different spelling of what I consider an otherwise common name. I don't judge anyone for it, and I don't think they should change it, I just NOTICE it, when I would usually not. And being thrown off like that annoys me *shrug*

And I have all the sympathy in the world for British who have to see American spellings everywhere, especially if they have the same quirks as I and the OP seem to have.

Be careful some one doesn't knock you off that high horse you are putting yourself and the other commenter on. Being ethnocentric is not something you should be defending, however "logically" you think they explain themselves.

The very fact you felt the need to say "misspellings" (in quotes or not), rather than just saying British spellings is a part of what kinda makes you seem like an ass. And sometimes when people are annoyed by stupid things, they work to get over it. 'You're annoyed at what you're annoyed at' is no excuse. I could maybe understand if a word had a different meaning in what ever version of English some one uses (I have an English friend who has admitted to being thrown out of dialog or prose by the word 'bangs' and I imagine the pants vs Trousers thing can lead to the odd misunderstanding). But that word has no meaning in American English, so essentially you have just learned a "new" word. Add it to your vocab and move on.

It's nice to know that you don't feel you need to grow up. I'm personally of the opinion that I'll continue to grow up until the day I die.

I'm personally going to work on allowing myself to be annoyed by people on the web.

And sometimes when people are annoyed by stupid things, they work to get over it.

And they're NEVER EVER allowed to talk about it for fear of annoying other people about what annoys them.
