Lol iawtc. The OP of 164 seems to have Doc Who as their main fandom, a show which was notoriously asexual until RTD got his grubby little hands on it. OP just needs to have a little look into the zines of Starsky and Hutch, Star Trek and other fandoms from the 70s to realise that 'fen' have always been sex obsessed.

I think what I meant is that to me there seemed to a big contingent of old school Doctor Who shippers who were adamant that the Doctor is/was asexual. I'm not that into the fandom though, so that could be very wrong *apologises*. I do know that other fandoms from the 70s had zines with lots of over 18 content - fic and art - which contradicts the OP's theory that it's only us youngun's who are perverted sex fiends. As someone in the Who fandom, do you know whether there was any similar X-rated content handed around at Who cons back in the day?

Haha, no, I know what you meant. I was just mentioning that...'cause I'm odd. I don't actually know that much about "back in the day" as I got into DW with Eccleston, lol. I just particularly thought I'd mention Eight since he was the first Doctor to snog...(according to RTD)

Way back when I started going to cons, we did zines with take out sections. The main part of the zine was fairly PG or PG 13. You wanted the 'asbestos pages', ie the adult stuff, you had to prove you were over 18. Then you got handed a extra zine to insert into the right part of the stories.

Yeah, I've seen some Kirk/Spock illustrations which... asbestos would be needed.

I love looking at old zine illustrations personally - some are just great artwork on their own merit. And other - others are just insane. It's like 'so, they're naked... and entwined in vines. and Spock is feeding Kirk an apple. So, Garden of Eden/original sin overtones here. I can deal with that. But - waitaminute - why is a badger taking up 20% of the foreground? And why is it watching? OH GOD WHY IS IT WATCHING' etc. It makes me happy.

I...I've only seen a very few paper!zine illustrations, and this was my experience exactly. I think the weirder ones scared me off (though actually it was probably more that it's hard to get a hold of the old stuff any more, than anything--'cause I avoid a lot of fanart for the same reason now).

I've always thought being an old school slasher must have been so fun because when you went to cons it would be like you were part of a super sekrit society. Once you were at the con (this is my imagination fully at work here) you'd have to first look around to find the shady corner stall hawking the ... *gasp* slash, and then I like to think you'd have to do some secret handshake and pay only in unmarked bills to get the good stuff. So, a lot more romantic and exciting then just opening up google and typing in 'gay porn'.

I remember at one con, the 'skerit pages' were kept in sealed manila envelopes. You showed ID if they didn't know you were old enough (a lot of us knew each other for a long time by then) and you got your envelope.

What about One/Cameca, Two/Jamie, or Four/Romana? I've sure people who've seen more of the old school can add to the list of Possible Subtext.

Hey, I was shipping Four/Sarah Jane back in the '80s, and I've never bought the whole "the Doctor is asexual" line. Seven pretended to be because it made things simpler, but that's just one incarnation of the Doctor. One absolutely was not, and I have a hard time imagining how anyone could think Four was asexual given that Tom Baker had chemistry with anything that moved.

*apologises to all the Doctor Who shippers* - I didn't mean that there weren't shippers or that it shouldn't be shipped, more that my understanding was that the people who were adamant that he was asexual were the majority in the fandom. And I'm very willing to be corrected on that point.
