Well, I have to say... I'm British and I think that the use of the word 'Gaol' looks off in most modern writing. It's not commonly used here at all and I know people who wouldn't see it as the same word (I myself almost always wanna read it 'gay-ole' due to the spelling).

I can see it being fine in things set way back and the like, but... Eh. It does seem out of place in MOST things. I like the spelling, but I would find it jarring in a manga scanlation, especially when I have never seen anything but the spelling 'Jail' taught here, except possibly in History classes.

But it's okay that you're annoyed by British spellings. Dropped U's and Z's in place of S's drives me crazy, too. Again, just personal preferences. ;)

I think I went by the Wiktionary entry that just said it was an "alternative" spelling of jail -- didn't know how common either one was in modern use :)

And for the longest time, I actually thought, like you want to read it, that it WAS pronounced that way (along with gaoler XD), and was...just an old-fashioned word for jail. Even now I can't pronounce it correctly on first try XD;;;

And as long as no one's getting oppressed for their spelling preferences, I think it's all fine :P (though I wish I could tell my grandchildren in the future how I fought bravely in the Great War of Gray vs. Grey...)

(No, Earl Grey was a Prime Minister in the nineteenth century. It's a man's name, not a colour-word, in this case.)
