1. The universe is either deterministic or random.
2. We are part of the universe.
3. Either we have free will or we don't.
4. Free will, unless you believe in something "outside of the Universe that transcends the realm of the physical into the spiritual", cannot exist in either a deterministic or random universe.

That's it.

Why can't there be free will inside a random system?

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-03 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Because then you wouldn't have free will, your decisions would be random.

Re: 110

[identity profile] futurefirelord.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
But that presupposes that everything in the universe is random. If the creation of the universe, etc is random, it doesn't mean that we, as people and a species are random in our action. For example, my action at this moment, to continue debating with you, is not a random act. It's a decision that I reached.

The creation of so many human inventions and institutions were not random (Well, some of them were), but based off of the work of others. I will allow that there are some elements of randomness within our little system, but it is not at all entirely random.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-03 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
If humans are part of a random Universe, they have no other choice but to be random. A random Universe would be a Universe in which humanity came to exist by mere chance.

The Universe itself is controlled by either randomness or causality. We, as humans, are part of said Universe. So either your actions, as part of the Universe, are random or they're the result of a mere chain of reactions.

Re: 110

[identity profile] futurefirelord.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that's not true. Some things do happen by random chance, but human actions and reactions to our environment (random as it may be) are not random in the least.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
If humans are part of the Universe, they're ruled by the random rules of the Universe. Unless they somehow exist somewhere beyond the Universe. You're thinking there is some kind of "you" to make the decisions still which is the root of the problem, there is no little "you" in there deciding, "you" are a complex, pattern-functioning system that interacts with the world, so complex that the causal interactions that produce your decisions will probably remain something science can't fully investigate, our brains are just too complex, but determined they are.

Re: 110

[identity profile] dragoon1940.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Or there could be a different set of rules governing our mental processes. Or the rules could be different in terms of scale. You're thinking it's either it's one or the other when it's not.

And I know I am me. I know I make my decisions. I think, therefor I am. My personality, my decisions, my thoughts, my ideas, are not just the result of random happenstance, but a result of me being who I am. I know I am me and therefor I am me.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-04 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
The rules are certainly not different in terms of scale, that's why they're rules. The Universe is controlled by a single logic. Humans being part of said Universe can't escape said logic.

And you're evading the question. Unless that so-called "you" exists outside the rules of the Universe, it is ruled by the rules of the Universe.

How much do I love that you're using an icon of Rei for this?

[identity profile] dragoon1940.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ironic and appropriate at the same time!

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless the rules that govern your thought processes and consciousness are different from the randomized rules that govern the govern the actual physical universe, because that would allow not only free will, but the creation of order within a random system.

Re: 110

[identity profile] dragoon1940.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much what I was trying to say. Thank you!

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
But why would the rules that govern your thought processes be different from the rules that govern the Universe when said thought process is sustained by the physical Universe itself?

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Because your consciousness doesn't exist on the same plane as the physical universe? Unless you mean to tell me that abstract concepts such as reason operate on the same basic mechanics as atoms do.

You're trying to impose a set of physical rules on something that isn't physical.

Re: 110

(Anonymous) 2009-02-04 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Our thoughts have foundation on the physical and the possible... unless you believe in a soul that makes humans special or something.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
This has nothing to do with souls and you're evading. The fact that we think has foundation in physical biology, that doesn't mean that what we think and the abstract systems that govern our behaviour in addition to the physical systems are going to be completely compatible and operating under the same set of rules.

Re: 110

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Why can't we? Because you've aligned your premises in a neat little list to illustrate how they are obviously logical, and therefore completely true?
