There's a lot of debate over whether or not having APD is in fact the same thing as being a sociopath. But, even if she does have APD, she doesn't fit *all* the criteria. I disagree that she is exceedingly impulsive. If she had frequent breakdowns throughout the series, I could see where you're coming from. For the most part, she plans meticulously ahead and sticks to those plans, which is the opposite of being impulsive. Her breakdown only began when she was abandoned by Ty Lee and Mai, which further shows a level of emotional involvement that is not common in sociopaths.

Still, when you look at the bigger picture and what the OP was trying to say, it's really more than just insecurity and social ineptness. Perhaps somewhere inbetween, I'm not entirely sure as I'm not a professional Psychologist nor do I intend to go into that field. Either way, she does show a crapton of signs and likely has some degree of APD.

'We've been presented with an extraordinary opportunity, girls' - I doubt she went into Ba Sing Se knowing what she was going to do. She took it over on impulse; she had some planning (she knew the Avatar was in Ba Sing Se, and Kyoshi Warrior outfits would get her in, for one), but most of what happened was up to chance. She simply acted on what was happening, and acted in a way that fit her larger scheme.

That's how I interpreted it, anyway.

Ah, but she wouldn't have acted if it hadn't 'fit her larger scheme'. Acting impulsively is to literally act without considering the consequences. Azula is certainly versatile, but she has never once acted in a way that would undermine her overarching plans. When I think of sociopaths behaving impulsively, I think of the crime lord who shoots an underling 'just because'. Azula never does anything 'just because'. Well, not before her Villainous Breakdown, in any case.

I haven't watched Avatar, so I can't comment on her diagnosis, but you don't have to meet every criterion to be diagnosed with a DSM disorder--and a bunch of those are just common traits of people with APD, which are not necessary in a diagnosis. The offical criteria, stolen from that bastion of credibility known as Wikipedia:

"Three or more of the following are required:

1. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;
2. Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure;
3. Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead;
4. Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults;
5. Reckless disregard for safety of self or others;
6. Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations;
7. Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another."

Some disorders have criteria that must be met (for major depression disorder, you must have a depressed mood or decreased interest or pleasure), but for other disorders, you can have two people with the same disorder showing none of the same symptoms (which raises questions about the validity of the DSM, but I digress).

You're right. What I was trying to point out is that, even if she does have APD, she isn't defined by it. And that she's hardly a 'textbook' case. I probably should have made that more clear.
