I'm not really in this fandom, but that's some pretty fanart!

Declawing cats is wrong and evil, and I too automatically dislike anyone who does it to a cat. It hurts, not just at the time, but permanently. And they can't walk the way they are meant to, which means they often get arthritis in their legs. And they don't want to use the litter box because the litter hurts. And they can't defend themselves. And they end up using teeth when they can't use claws as a warning or protective action, and the same owners who had them declawed then think the cat is a bad cat for doing the only thing it can.

Declawing a cat is not like even removing our nails would be. It is like taking off all our fingers at the first knuckle. Their claws are attached firmly and deeply and are an extremely important thing that they use in all sorts of ways.

I'm glad it is already illegal a lot of places, I wish it were illegal everywhere.

Oh, wait...I think I can see how the musical is racist in its casting choices - the fact it's taken until its 35yr to cast a non-white actor as Christine (in the UK, IDK about Broadway) and I don't know if the UK has had a non-white Phantom (there was on Broadway).

I guess the fact they've never cast a trans person makes it terf-y?

I'm confused, too. There's certainly some orientalism, typical to the period it was written in. But there aren't any Persian characters more villainous than the native French. And the darogha is far and away the most honourable, heroic character in there, and he gets most of the good scenes at the end, so...

Shrug.

Unless we're talking about Andrew Lloyd Weber's version? Because he definitely whitewashed his adaptation of the story.

Where I am, no vet will do it legally any longer, however>/i> growing up all of our cats were declawed because until about ten-ish years ago, your average person (in my experience) had no idea it wasn't just like clipping nails and it was just something vets did.

I would absolutely judge someone now if they did it, but I can't past-judge people for ignorance.

FWIW, I don't think this is common practice anymore. I don't personally know of anyone whose cat is declawed.
