A24 isn't for me either.

(Anonymous) 2021-05-21 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched any A24 movies and all the ones I've even heard about, through trailers or promotional stuff or recommendations, I've never had the slightest inclination to try. Not the horror movies (Under the Skin, The VVitch, The Killing of A Sacred Deer, Hereditary, Midsommar), not the award-winning ones (Room, Moonlight, Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, Uncut Gems, Minari), not the artistic ones that weren't really award-winning (A Ghost Story, Under the Silver Lake), not even the ones about things I thought would make interesting movies (Swiss Army Man, The Lighthouse). They all seem esoteric and designed to make me feel discomfited and that's not what I want in a movie.

you made me realize how many of their movies i like, but they're exactly the type of slow character stuff i enjoy.

Well, even though they aren't for me, it's nice that now you know to maybe keep an eye out for their productions since they make films you like.

Well, there's a reason why A24 is not a mainstream distributor and it's by design. I don't watch most of their films either, because they like their art-house horrors to much for my not-watching-any-horrors-thank-you ass, but it sound's a bit like for you the horrors colour everything else they for you...?

Because there's really nothing esoteric and discomfiting about, for example, Lady Bird...? Moonlight and Minari were also rather lovely, in different ways, of course, but they were very empahtic and left me feeling better rather than worse (because they did highlight humanity/possibility of forming connections). A24 also distributed The Farewell, the 20th Century Women, American Honey, The Florida Project, the First Cow...All very grounded real-life stories by creators who had good eye for human relations and a lot of heart for their subjects.

I feel discomfited by different things for different movies - sometimes because of disturbing scenes, sometimes for the awkwardness, sometimes for the melancholy that seems laced through. But you may be right that the horror movies do make me less inclined to explore the others (I like a fair amount of horror, but their horror is definitely not horror I believe would enjoy).

I've liked a couple of A24 movies... but I've also REALLY hated a few of their horror movies that I thought I would like, so it does tend to make me wary. There are a couple I hope I'll enjoy, but a few more that just knowing they're A24 has killed my interest. With Midsommar it was knowing it was Ari Aster in particular that dealt a real blow to my willingness to watch, but based on some of the reviews I've read, it's just as well.

TBH I think that A24 is good Arthouse stuff, but for that very reason it's perfectly OK if they are not your thing either. Taste is subjective and people who look down on anyone because of it are dumb, it's also commendable this person actually gave the movies a chance before finally deciding it isn't for them.

I've seen several of them and enjoyed them except for Ghost Story, I found it boring, pretentious and an insult to actually good slow cinema, like lmao I'm sorry but the pie scene? Midsommar is pretty overrated too.
