Huh. And I find people who, instead of taking pride in their cultural heritage and pleasure in sharing it with the rest of the world, get all proprietary and 'hands off my culture' about it, fairly pathetic. So, there you go.

I think it's more of a case of finding Anglophiles, weeaboos (people in that vein) annoying. In other words, people who refuse to see a country for what it is and only like the 'good' aspects or what is presented in TV shows.

I'm sorry, that makes no sense to me. Every place has its own unique culture and yes, outsiders fixate on the 'good' aspects of cultures foreign to them, but why is that a bad thing? Would you rather American Doctor Who fans bash your country for its weaknesses? Also, remember, many Americans can directly trace their ancestry to the UK so in a way, British culture is theirs, too. Do you think African Americans who decorate their homes with African art, give their children African names, etc. are annoying? They're proud of their heritage and there's nothing wrong with that.

I live near New Orleans and we get tons of visitors here who come to experience Mardi Gras, try the food, go to zydeco performances, because that's all they know of this area; it's what they've seen in movies and on TV. Does that offend/annoy me? Hell, no. I'm proud and pleased to share my culture. Diversity and the sharing of it - it's what makes life amazing.

I think you missed the point I was trying to make - and I'm not the OP, I was simply trying to offer what the OP might have been trying to get at. No, I don't think it's annoying. Like I said, I was simply trying to offer what the OP might have meant. Regardless, that's your opinion and that's fine.

However, there are a number of people who will watch a TV show or two and then think that suddenly, they know about a culture, a country and that what is presented in that TV show, or shows, is correct and that is all there is to it. I can completely understand why people would find that frustrating because they are missing a lot. There are so many layers to different cultures and countries and to simply latch on to one or two aspects undoubtedly seems odd and evidently annoying to some. If a person wants to learn about a culture, shouldn't they want to learn about the entirety of it, not just the things that they pick and choose? The diversity, the good and bad is what makes cultures interesting.

TV and movies almost never get south Louisiana culture right (especially the accents) but I don't get annoyed with people who have misconceptions based on that. On the contrary, I have fun sharing the real thing with them.

But the OP didn't say that at all, anyway. She/he says, "I find people who become obsessed with British culture after watching Doctor Who fairly pathetic." By the very definition of the word, someone 'obsessed' is going to do what you're suggesting -- they're going to want to learn about the entirety of British culture down to every tiny detail. Actually, it sounds like the OP is annoyed by the very thing you say people should do. The OP didn't say that she/he's annoyed by people who think they know everything about British culture after watching a couple eps of Doctor Who.
