I think most of the time people don't know where redemption fits in the conflict of the narrative. It's not an internal conflict for the villain, technically, but an internal conflict for the victim, usually the protagonist. It's a social conflict for the villain. But I agree I love these tropes. and you know, the "bad" version is a trope in of itself, that I can enjoy if I think of it that way.
