My guess is it's a combination of not really thinking and her assumptions that you're more flexible about media, so you'd be more willing to try things that require subtitles. She probably doesn't see it as being slightly hypocritical.

I thought it was more, "We are sharing things in our home language, but not some random language either of us know."

I wonder if OP has shared things in their own language (or whatever one their friend doesn't know), and what the friend's response was.
