I know that people usually dismiss this kind of thing by saying that there's always been drama (goodness knows I've seen enough of it way back in the day on LiveJournal between over zealous fandoms and on places like ONTD) - but I've noticed this too on a more malicious level and nitpicking level.

Not gonna name the fandom, but I'm currently in one where there's a large amount of under 18 year old fans and I swear every time there's an update - there's people already trying to find something wrong with it and escalate it beyond basic reasoning. One time the word infodump got used in passing as a mild insult, and suddenly there was a herd of people claiming that it was a deeply offensive term for people with autism - which only eventually stopped when people with actual autism stepped forward to say that they hadn't felt insulted by 'infodump' - not at least to the level where the screechers were treating it like a deadly slur.

I usually just ignore these idiots who act like every little thing is a fight for rEaL aCtIvIsM, and just focus on fanart and other fandom content; but jeezus it does feel like its getting worse.

That's because the young fans coming up have grown up online. They socially interact differently, are less mature and are mostly arrogant, entitled pricks.

I second this!

DA

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that young people today have not only grown up online, but their parents posted practically every single aspect of their lives online from the time they were babies. So they're used to living in a world where everything they say and do gets some kind of attention from somebody, be it family members or friends or so forth, and that translates into them being used to getting attention for everything they say and do as teenagers/young adults.

i love how you're unironically parroting shit that people of my grandparents age would constantly say about my generation when i was a teen. absolutely marvelous, please never gain any self-awareness.

AYRT Eh, technology has changed things and people. Growing up constantly exposed to it and using it has had an impact. Feel free to keep your head in the sand there though.

if the current adult generation of fandom, my generation, had social media back in our heydays we'd wouldn't have been any better. this shit isn't because kids are getting worse, it's because kids are dumb and aren't good at thinking things through when they're mad. social media isn't a good thing to have when you're that young and volatile tbh.

Of course former generations would have been just the same, nobody is saying otherwise. The difference is that the generation coming up have had the internet as a major part of their formative years. That's a concrete difference and it has had an effect.
