Yeah I feel the same about this OP. It wasn't a bad episode, but there's been a lot of times I've seen 'IF YOU DIDN'T CRY YOU HAVE NO SOUL' - which kind of made me feel more indifferent than before.

da

yeah, i thought it was so transparently and openly manipulative that it just didn't register

How is something that is a bummer not sad?

I guess I don't split them from one another

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Bummer = "that's rough, buddy."

bummer = "that's sad, friend"

Regional difference, I suppose

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bummer when you miss your bus. It's sad when the bus hits a cat.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's also a bummer if the bus hits a cat.

This is definitely a regional difference

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
What region are you in? Because I've lived in multiple parts of the US plus 3 other countries, and in none of them would it be okay to tell someone whose cat died that it was a bummer.

If someone told me "That's a bummer" when my cat died, I would've punched them.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
This. Bummer is like, "Well that kind of sucks, oh well, moving on."

+1

exactly this

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Totally synonymous for me

bummer, dude!

Even thinking about this episode makes me tear up still. That's just me though. Stuff like this is going to hit different people in different ways.

This episode killed me, and I've never been able to rewatch it even knowing that later on the dog gets a better ending.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? As a casual watcher of Futurama, I have to see this better ending for the dog.

In one of the later seasons there is an episode where Fry travels to the past.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-09 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So in other words...sad?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I forget where I saw this-- with a group of friends, I think, so half-watching it-- and frankly was more surprised than sad given that we had some really goofy jokes (like the one about Dolemite) and then suddenly that ending. More of a "Did I just see what I thought I saw?"

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I've never liked this episode. It doesn't make me sad exactly, just kinda pisses me off? I'm not sure why. I love my dogs, so it should've struck a chord with me, but it left me feeling annoyed.

I honestly don't know the distinction you're making. are the people above right and it's a depth of feeling issue?

OP here

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't realise people viewed bummer as a strong sad feeling. I meant that the episode didn't make me cry or emotional like the reactions I keep seeing. I literally didn't care about the dog.

Re: OP here

(Anonymous) 2021-06-10 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
Bummer is an expression of disappointment, not sadness, and almost no one views “bummer” as a strong emotional response. Its just that all three people who do are in this thread. There’s a reason you can’t buy sympathy cards that say What a bummer :(

I guess it's not a proper f!s submission if people don't get unnecessarily pedantic in the comments.
