I hate product placement because it never goes away. If you watch a show 20 years later, you’re probably watching it in a form that excludes commercial breaks, but you’re still seeing the product placement for products you couldn’t buy anymore even if you wanted to.

No, it's so great! I have old comics dating back to the 1970s and the best thing about them is the ancient toy ads. Once the computer game ads start it's even better.

+1

I love looking at ads in my old/older comic books. Ads for the PlayStation? Ads for The Matrix/Matrix style ads for random shit?

Old catalogue "send a postage and $1.50 and get these pocket classic books" and the letters to editor-- I'm right there with anon!

When I was a kid my Dad taped somethings off the TV with commercials intact and now half the fun is getting to see them. (Teddy Ruxbin - what a trip)

I'm used to the shilling of products in the contemporary Chinese and Korean dramas, Eternal Monarch was particularity bad with the constant promoting of that cold-coffee brand, but you pretty much never see this kind of thing in Wuxia dramas so it definitely made me pause the first time the a-typical 'let me tell you about X-brand' spiel came out of GX's mouth.

Also the bags they had the nuts in looked way too modern. xD

But bless this show and it's budget issues honestly.

I honestly love outright shilling, it just feels very old-school and harmless compared to other forms of advertising

There’s been some fantastic examples of American soap opera product placement floating around online - my favorite so far may be the Days of Our Lives one below (storyline, who cares? Frozen chicken time!):

ahhh yes, the wolong nuts. wonderfully terrible product placement, but they also saved the production of the show so i can't be too mad.

My favourite so far has been some gratutious product placement for a bit of mountain-climbing kit in one of the Lost Tomb shows, and then it broke (in-story) and nearly got the main character killed. They wouldn't get away with that in a US drama, I'm fairly sure! I still remember on White Collar when they needed to put Peter in a completely different definitely not Ford Taurus car for a spurious reason one day so they could have a car crash!

I haven't watched WoH yet, have been actively avoiding all spoilers, and yet I somehow still know all about the nuts XD

It's pretty cringey in CW shows too. "Just bing it" said no one ever. Followed by a loving closeup of an internet hotspot.

The ubiquity of bing omg lol although I don't mind when they use Android products, as I too have an Android

That's hilarious and this fic made me chirp lol

I usually hate the really blatant product placement (especially if it's like in the MDZS donghua where ice cream is just so weirdly out of place) but I didn't mind it as much in this for three reasons. 1. Wen Kexing eating walnuts (and Zhou Zishu being majorly grossed out by them) is a recurring thing/running gag in the novel so a nut product placement is hilariously fitting. 2. They actually call it out as product placement on the show and I respect that haha and 3. The sponsor deal apparently helped this show a LOT and I like the show so I'm fine with this.
