If you're sincere I have a hard time believing you because "I have many gay friends" is what super-homophobes always say to pretend they're not.

Believe me or don't, dude, it makes no difference to me either way. I'm not a homophobe, my friends know I'm not, and that's all that really matters in the equation.

And that's great, but like I said so many people say that just to backpedal and not look bad when they really *are* homophobic that very few people are really going to believe someone who really means it.

Ahaha this is pretty much what I was going to say. It really smacks of the "I'm not homophobic, I have ~*gay friends*~!" kind of line.

I live with a gay couple and I'm not really a big fan of slash. (I'm okay with it if the characters are already canon gay or if there's enough subtext to suggest a gay relationship, but I don't understand people that just slash every male character they run across with another guy.)

Besides, whether or not you're into slash doesn't reflect how much of a homophobe you are (or aren't). Look at all the secrets/comments lately from some people who oppose marriage rights for gays but are still fans of slash.

I don't get why people get all touchy about the gay friends argument. Sometimes having gay friends does that make that difference. You know first-hand they're people first, and their sexuality doesn't dominate who they are.

I'm not the original poster, I'm just asking because I'm curious. :) I don't like the yaoi/slash overdose, but I'm tolerant towards it. However, if at times I dare to write about my negative feelings, even if I add that "I'm not a homophobe", most people say that this one sentence just justifies that I'm one.
But I'm writing this in advance to a comment that's bound to come at my comment, you know.

So, what are people like me supposed to write? If I don't write anything in addition to my thoughts, people will say that I'm a homophobe. If I add that "I'm not a homophobe", people will point out that I must have wrote that because I'm one.

I see there is a difference here beause the OP really wanted to establish his/her views and that might suspicious for some, but I've been wanting to write this for a long time, and sorry, you ended up being the chosen one from the thousands. :D

For me personally? I only get suspicious when people add things like that. If you just said that you don't like the overload of slash because you think the attitude of "two guys are friendly, they must be doing it" is ridiculous I would understand. For me, I've heard the "gay friends" thing so many times from people who I know are just saying it to cover their asses that now everytime I hear it it just sounds like ass-covering to me.

Whether you say it or not there are always going to be people who will think you're a homophobe. Do whichever feels better for you. I hope this made even a little sense. Just my personal feelings on it.
