Yesss. I have het BFF ships, and I don't get chewed out because OMG A MAN AND A WOMAN CAN BE BEST FRIENDS THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE SHAGGING. But if it's a slash ship? Suddenly I'm degrading the nature of male/male or female/female friendship? Wut?

lol, I know -- beceause it's SO HARD OUT THERE for a m/m or f/f friendship, amirite? They never get any fair representation.

I have het BFF ships, and I don't get chewed out because OMG A MAN AND A WOMAN CAN BE BEST FRIENDS THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE SHAGGING.

I don't know, it seems to me people (myself included) are always getting chewed out in the HP fandom and others for shipping close friendship pairings like Harry/Hermione, Neville/Ginny, etc. There's even a thread in the VENOM section of FAP (HP forum) called "why do friendships always have to be made romantic?". I'm always hearing that OMG A MAN AND A WOMAN CAN BE BEST FRIENDS THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE SHAGGING chorus, tbh (many of my ships--H/Hr, Artemis/Holly, Jacob/Bella, etc--are based on close friendships, so the subject comes up a lot), so I can't really agree with you there--I feel like people get pissed off about people shipping friendships no matter the orientation. *shrug*

Interesting! I haven't had that experience; I've had people get bemused at some of my het BFF ships, and one or two get downright hostile, but it's never (to my memory) been because of the BFF element. It's always been based on the same reason that most ship wars happen -- I see a type of chemistry or possibility that someone else doesn't. My slash and femslash BFF ships, on the other hand, I've had people seriously accuse me of not being able to see a friendship between two men or two women without sexualizing it.

It might be a canon-based slant, but I can't elaborate that thought any further because I'm not sure what the dividing line would be.

That's because OBWHF shippers are so frequently assholes who can't deal with the fact that even though Rowling gave them everything they ever wanted, not everyone is falling all over themselves to kiss their asses and say "OMG you were right! I totes love R/Hr now!" They are like evangelical Christians who cannot deal with the fact that even though their religion gets all its major holidays off automatically and I still have to use vacation days to go to shul on Yom Kippur, some people prefer to say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" and acknowledge that there are in fact other holidays.

It doesn't happen nearly as much in other fandoms.
