As an artist who does not have epically amazing art, especially compared to the other artists in the fandom communities I'm in, I say I suck, because it saves my ass from getting made fun of behind my back.

You've never gotten comments like "Stupid western art should die" and "Americans shouldn't draw manga" and shit like that, so just shut the fuck up.

My pathetic defense for saying "SORRY IT LOOKS RUSHED, BUT I HOPE YOU FIND IT AS FUN TO LOOK AT AS I DID DRAWING IT" or some comment like that when I post my art.

Yes, this. I wonder if the OP is a fanartist? Because I think this is something other artists understand, but non-artists can't. There is so much art elitism in fandom and people very much DO look down on and comment nastily (though usually in their own LJs) about artwork they think isn't up to their standards. By putting your artwork out there with disclaimers like, 'I know I eff'd up the hair' or 'I know the proportions are off', the elitists know to just scroll on by while those who are less picky may still want to take a look.

If you're so insecure in your art that you feel you have to add disclaimers as excuses for people who say mean things about your art, that's sad.

For a lot of people, being 'insecure' is just another part of a person's personality, no different than any other personality trait. Some people are shy, some are not; some people anger easily, some don't; some people are amazingly empathetic, some have no ability whatsoever to imagine what other people may be feeling. But as an 'insecure' artist, if I post artwork with a note that acknowledges the piece's shortcomings, I am absolutely NOT fishing for compliments. I'm simply discussing the artwork honestly.

Personally, I've always been more puzzled (not annoyed, though, just puzzled) by the artists that are so self-assured with their artwork when it's mediocre at best.

I agree. I'm so insecure about my artwork/writing abilities that I rarely share anything outside of my own journal (which can be entirely avoided) to the point that I have trouble discussing the plot of my comic with people who actually do care. And all the fanfiction I've written (or tried to write) has never left my hard drive. I'm creative by nature and I feel like I should share some of the things I've made with someone else, but I'm shy and don't know how to go about it the right way. (I also don't want to come off as conceited, either.) I don't understand why this makes me a bad person.

I actually have gotten comments like that before, but I don't resort to "LOL GOD I'M SUCH A SUCKY ARTIST HAHAHAH. ANATOMY FAAAAAAIL. I HOPE THIS DOESN'T BURN YOUR EYES OK. :D" It doesn't matter how good or bad your art is, there will always be people that don't find it to their tastes. Suck it up. If you're so terrified of big bad Internet meanies bashing your artwork, you shouldn't be posting it on a public website in the first place.

Or maybe you should not be browsing art sites if it pisses you off so much that insecure people are self-depreciating?

It might be because I post my drawings on art communities and somehow end up viewing other people's pages, as well.

Then don't read it? Or at least realize that it doesn't actually affect you in any way and you should just let people vent?
