Because the canon pairings are often lame?

Because canons treat females as inherently sexual to the point of forcing romantic relationships that would be seen as fraternisation or sexual harassment in the real world, yet in most media fandoms confine men to being friends with each other?

People who only find non-canon shipping objectionable when it's two guys are being homophobic even if they think they aren't.

I think that this comes down to a matter of opinion for every single person who wants to argue this. I am a HUGE fan of Scotty and Kevin on Brothers and Sisters. I think it's the most adorable, loving relationship I have ever seen. And I would never try to ship those two openly gay men who are married with women. It doesn't work in my head. Kevin does not like vagina, end of story.

Same goes for me with men who are obviously not gay. So if that makes me homophobic w/e. Seeing as how I'm a lesbian I guess that would be called ~irony~.

HAHAHAH.

I'm sure if you try hard enough you can find specific examples of m/f couples who shouldn't be shipped, but the point remains the same.

If people consider their dislike of slash to be DEFENDING FRIENDSHIP but don't consider m/f and f/f friendships some kind of holy grail that needs to be protected from people that want to sexualise them, their heteronormative asses are showing.

I find it irritating that everyone's assuming someone's a homophobe because they don't like the concept of "BFFs = lovers." Just because a relationship is as strong as a bond like that doesn't mean it always has to manifest into something sexual in nature.

And I'm probably shooting myself in the foot here, because yeah, I am for a diversion from basic canon stuff. And yes, I believe your argument has validity in the idea that there are some canon dynamics that would be highly out-of-order in the real world. But for the most part, I see some logic in 170.

But what am I saying. This is ZE INTERNETZ. One person's icky-squicky is another person's OTP.

I find it irritating that people who hate slash and say they are DEFENDING FRIENDSHIP ZOMG usually think I'm annoyingly unromantic when I tell them that I understand how they feel because I think Mulder and Scully should have stayed professional, Hermione Granger shouldn't have been turned into the prize for Harry or Ron to win, Foreman shouldn't be banging his clinical trials patients, Chase and Cameron were better off as fuckbuddies, &c.

Suddenly all their zeal to defend platonic or at least non-romantic friendships goes up in a puff of heteronormative smoke.

Point. But I still stand by what I said. Not every friendship that becomes incredibly close manifests into something sexual in nature. Hetero or homosexual. Call it prudish, but I believe it.

But whatev. INTERNETZ. My foot in my mouth, etc.

I really hated what happened to Mulder and Scully (one reason why I stopped watching The X-Files).

Uh, the difference is they're CANON.

I don't understand people who only ship non-canon same sex couples, though. I've shipped some same sex couples before, but I've shipped just as many non-canon straight couples, too. I don't get the whole fetish of straight fans purely shipping same sex couples. I know there are a lot of other people like me out there who ship both het and slash, but when someone says "slash fangirl" I immediately get a negative mental image of a "fag hag," basically (sorry if that term offends anyone, I can't think of a PC way to put it).

I don't understand it either. We have straight women who think het is wrong. (And before overenthusiastic slashers call me a homophobe, I ship guys if it's canon or at least some very strong hints. And no, fangirls, "they looked at each other" is not a strong hint.
