Certain things do make people go "come back, fourth wall!" but if you're already writing/reading rpf I don't see how meeting someone is going to suddenly make you unable to do that.

I know people who won't write RPF about people they've met and actually gotten to know because their reasoning for "RPF isn't bad" is because they're working with public personas, and once they've gotten to know the person it's hard to keep up that dividing line between "Public Face/Actual Person". I see the logic there, although it's not how I feel.

That's different from meeting someone once and all of a sudden getting squicked, though. If you can only write RPF about people you've never encountered in the real world...maybe you need to think twice about whether you think it's ok to write, period.

(I also know someone who met a band, got to know them enough to...lose all respect for them, and now she can't write or read them because she can't see them as anything but the jerks she doesn't respect. But that's not what the secret writer's talking about, either)

Yeah. I mean, I've had moments where I've gone "OH MY GOD, THIS PERSON COULD THEORETICALLY SEE WHAT I'M WRITING" but that's never stopped me for good because duh, they're a real person and I knew that. That's why it's called real person fiction. And I've jokingly written slash about friends with other friends, so I don't think getting to know the individuals would make it much weirder, either.

But I can understand that last part. Finding out part of the core part of your personal perception/canon/etc is wrong, that they're jerks, etc., would mess it up.

Exactly!

I think having met the members of a band once, probably in the context of a thirty second meet and greet with time to have them sign a shirt and snap a picture is hardly enough interaction to cross the line into knowing them enough to be squicked. A minute does not a deep and meaningful relationship make.
