Uh, really? Your profile indicates quite the opposite. Most of the ships that you are "VERY into" according to your profile are not canon.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-08 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
This! Especially the fact that you ship the Non-canon Jack/Gwen replacing the canon slash paring, combined with this comment makes you seem like a homophobe.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-08 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
IKR? "I only ship canon pairings. Unless they are slash. Then I ship non-canon het pairings. And when I say 'I only ship canon pairings,' by 'canon pairing' I mean a male and female who are leads on a show and therefore must obviously be romantically involved even if nothing in the show indicates that this is true."

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Geez, are you all LOOKING for homophobes? I have never been homophobic, never will be. I'm freaking bisexual, how could I be a homophobe? My best friend is also bisexual. I prefer Jack/Gwen to Jack/Ianto, because I think it is more love than lust. And excuse me, how does nothing in the show indicate it is true? 'I love him... but not in the way I love you', and the dancing scene in 'Something Borrowed', and all the looks... it's very unsubtle, are you sure you didn't have your eyes closed when watching?

Anyway, why the hell am I trying to prove something I already know to be true, to two people looking to cause bother without having the guts to post under their actual names?

[identity profile] eviinsanemonkey.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Not saying you are a homophobe, just pointing out that there are people who suffer from self-homophobia while trying to come to terms with their sexuality.

Also: re Jack/Gwen vs. Jack/Ianto - I repeat what I said earlier: what you see and what someone else sees subtext wise is completely different. I personally find J/G scenes awkward. *shrug* To each there own and all that.

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You might not be implying I am, but the other two 'anonymous' people definitely are.

And I agree, lots of people see ships differently, and I don't have a problem with that, but when there's not even been a hint for it, for example shipping two males who are straight, THEN I find it strange.

Geez, I won't be making comments on here anymore, expressing my opinion (which is what this place is about) results in getting verbally attacked and being called a homophobe.

[identity profile] eviinsanemonkey.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know, that's why I prefaced mine with "not saying you are", lol.

when there's not even been a hint for it, for example shipping two males who are straight, THEN I find it strange.
But what you read as a hint isn't the same as what someone else reads as a hint. And, as far as characters go, when it comes down to writing slash fic about them, so long as it's written plausibly I've no problem with it. It's when people force characters together with constant A/N's of "OMG THEY"RE SO IN LOVE" despite the fact that their reading of the interaction between those two is different than someone else's that a problem arises.

[identity profile] dweo.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was anon because I was to lazy to log in not, because I'm a coward as you seem to imply.

I never said you were homophobe, just that the combination of your first comment with the fact that you ship a ship that replaces a canon slash paring makes you seem homophobe. I don't know you so I would never say you were.

I am a multi-shipper at heart and while I understand having problems with random parings, saying that you dislike non canon slash parings while shipping non canon het-parings simply doesn't sound good to me.

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like ANY ships if I don't see any particular evidence for them. It doesn't matter about gender. All I was implying was that some people (a lot of my friends actually, and they've admitted to it) really enjoy the guy/guy thing, and will actually create a pairing out of nothing. But obviously if there's a relationship/hints going on, such as Jack/Ianto, I have no problem about it.

[identity profile] dweo.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
So do you or don't you hate slash? The secret specifically says they hate (non canon) slash, so if you agree with that we will ask. If you say you don't like parings without attraction between them than I completely agree. But I probably see that two characters are attracted to each other where you might not see it and the other way around.
My problem was the way you said you completely agreed with the secret, while shipping non-canon het-parings.

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Slash is male/male - no, I don't hate that at all. I was agreeing with the part of the person's secret when they said 'just because two men are BFF doesn't mean they're f**king' etc... because I've come across people creating slash between two straight people, and I find it strange. I have to have at least some kind of strong hint to ship characters.

[identity profile] dweo.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And I have no problem with that at all. :D

Although I have to say seemingly straight people do not always stay straight. The number of straight women/men I have seen in gay bars trying to pick up a one night stand is staggering.

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank god, lol. And really? I didn't expect that. But I suppose lots of people are very curious.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-08 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No, only one of us said anything about you being homophobic. I didn't say you were homophobic. You may or may not be, but that wasn't really my point. I said that you are not shipping "canon pairings" in most cases, so it makes no sense to criticize others for doing the same.

The show indicates that there is not a romantic relationship between them, regardless of whether either one would want there to be one. For it to be a CANON PAIRING, it would require them to be in a relationship in canon.

(Also, BTW, though I was not calling you homophobic, it is possible to either be bisexual and have some self-hatred issues or be a female bisexual and be homophobic re: male homosexuality.)

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You didn't say it, but you replied with 'IKR' (if you're that anonymous person) so I got the impression you agreed.

Yeah, I agree that it isn't canon, but there's certainly very strong hints that one day it could be.

(Anonymous) 2009-02-08 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I agreed that it sounds homophobic to say you only ship canon pairings when you actually ship a non-canon het pairing which would replace the canon slash pairing.

Okay, but it is still not at all a canon pairing (like most of the pairings you ship), and yet you claim to find "non-canon relationships in general a bit strange." But this only seems to apply to het pairings. Can you see how this seems a bit inconsistent? (Again, not necessarily homophobic, but definitely inconsistent and strange. There is nothing inherently homophobic about not shipping any male/male pairings, but it starts to get a little odd if one only criticizes slash pairings for being non-canon.)

[identity profile] rosie-not-rose.livejournal.com 2009-02-08 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm honest, I misunderstood the meaning of the word 'canon'. I thought it meant relationship or hint of one. Well, you learn something new every day!
