They're both also white, though.
He is pretty slashy with Rhodey during parts of Iron Man volume 1 (notably just after Tony's stopped drinking), but not in a healthy way. More in a borderline-abusive way that's not healthy for either of them, which is one reason why i don't write it.

Tony/Thor has potential to be a depressing pairing currently. Since Thor kind of hates him at the moment.
Most of Tony's relationships have the distressing ability to have their borderline abusive moments, I fear.

Someone else pointed out that the secret implied people coming over from the movie fandom (you know, twisting in knots to get out of writing James Rhodes), which is a fair cop.
Yeah, I didn't notice that until the "you don't actually care about Steve" implications had already sent me into a blind, wanky rage.
It's been my experience that people who get into a comics fandom through the movie tend to avoid comics-canon characters and ships like the plague and only do movie-verse (most X-Men movie-verse fans certainly seemed to *bitter Rogue/Gambit fan is still bitter that she got almost no new fic to read out of those movies*), so I've been surprised by the fact that anyone's come into our fandom at all, really.
Now that I've calmed down, I have to admit that there probably is some truth to the accusation for some of the newer and less mature writers. I've always been surprised that Tony/Rhodey gets so little play in movie fandom, where they're arguably slashier than in canon and don't have the whole "remember that time you used to knock me around and I used to let you" history to interfere with the happy, fluffy slash vibes (though, granted, they also don't have those ten-zillion times Tony casually stripped off his clothing in front of Rhodey in what I suspect was a failed attempt to seduce him). It's not as if Terrence Howard and RDJ aren't hot enough to justify slashing them on aesthetic grounds alone.
I suspect that at least some people who don't want to slash Rhodey are shipping Tony little-black-dress-crossover-style with some character from another movie or writing the omnipresent Tony/Pepper het rather than joining cap_ironman, though, since in order to write fic, they'd need to delve into decades worth of back canon in a fandom where the current canon sucks so very hard, and no improvement is in sight. Coming into Marvel fandom right now is probably kind of like being pimped into season six of Smallville or something. "It's totally great if you just assume canon stopped existing at X point, we swear!"

I don't think movieverse fans avoid it like the plague so much as they'd have to go wading into 40 years of backstory, and most of them seem veryl "we have a canon continuity. Let's stick to that." (10-to-1, the next movie's fandom will have lots of Gambit/Logan.)
The OP definitely had a point. If two white guys who looked as hot as RDJ and Terrance Howard where as vaguely homoerotic as Tony and Rhodey, people'd be jumping on it for ages. Which is, unfortunately, a common pattern in fandom.
I'd say canon's not bad, but that's just because my hot-button character is Luke Cage. And as long as they're doing right by Luke, and can handle anything. Also, as one of my friends says "if you're reading DC, Avengers is good, just on basic comparison." Which doesn't... actually mean it's good. Just that it doesn't suck NEARLY so hard. Dammit, comics.

Does DC even have any black characters other than John Stewart, Vic Stone, and Jakeem Thunder? I'm sure they must, but I'm drawing a blank. Edit: Duh, and Michael. How could I forget Mr. Terrific and his sexy motorcycle-racer-style costume, especially since he's 1/2 of my biggest JSA ship. *headdesks* I think my brain is secretly convinced that the JSA, JLI, and GLC aren't really part of the DCU.

I could practically hear the slash being typed up in my head during the bit of the movie where Rhodey finds Tony in the desert and is cradling him. Also the scene in the airplane where they're more interested in each other than the pole dancing stewardess. And the "Blow on my dice"/"I don't blow on men's dice" exchange (I could also hear the non-con being typed in my head during the "I'll steal your arc reactor now" scene with Stane). If I, whose OTP goggles are too strong to ever write it as anything but a pwp or a set-up for Tony/Steve's pure, deathless OTP love, can see it... yeah. Movie-verse fandom should have more Tony/Rhodey slash. No Tony/Jarvis, though, because I can't read the name "Jarvis" without thinking of canon Jarvis, and that would be almost as terrifying a mental image as Alfred/Batman.
Which is, unfortunately, a common pattern in fandom.
On that note: CSI fandom, why do you write so little Nick/Warrick? Have you all somehow missed that episode where Nick gets locked in a box with fireants and Warrick is angstily tortured about it? Have you not noticed that Warrick is aproximately 30% prettier than Greg?
