I couldn't agree with you more. This and the Tennant secret a few posts ago pissed me off. It's as if none of them has even read the damn book. And Fry might be able to pull it off, but I'd rather someone else be him as well.

Just because you're in a fandom and they're British doesn't mean "they're so perfect" for a role. -_-

I support the idea and I've not only read the book, I've discussed it with both of the main authors. Personally, I think Stephen Fry perfectly fits the description of Aziraphale (middle-aged extremely-and-utterly-British bookseller who is upon first glance - as the secret says - gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide). Regarding Crowley, a lot of depictions have him being younger, but that's not necessarily the only way of reading the book. I'd much rather have someone who can act and have the "best friend" air with Aziraphale than some "hot young stud" who CAN'T. It's very hard to establish best friend chemistry when one of the actors is so much younger than the other - possible, of course, but hard. Crowley is supposed to have lived since the fall. Young actors rarely have the gravitas to pull that off.

I'm not saying it isn't possible, nor that the two are perfect, but of the actors currently in the field, the Fry-Laurie combo would be excellent.

There is some thought besides "OMG Fry! Laurie! SQUEE!" going into some of these comments, y'know. Please don't assume there isn't.

Well, that's your opinion.

I'm not assuming the ONLY people to support the idea are the kind to SQUEE, but it would be very hard to convince me that most of them are not. So, don't take it personally.

I love the book so much that it will be very hard to please me and I, personally would much rather see someone other than laurie/fry as them. And, as I'm sure that they probably won't be and will keep my fingers crossed it makes no never mind to me.

I just hate fangirling and fanboying and it getting into things I love. It's bad enough with the slashing everywhere.

Oh, yes, I agree. Excessive fangirling is pointless and annoying, and I do think that Fry and Laurie aren't perfect for the roles. However, while many people are just fangirling, that doesn't really give you the right to come down on it. Perhaps they do honestly think that way rationally, after the initial squee is gone. It's a book. Everyone has the right to make their own casting judgements.

Personally the real reason I would like Fry and Laurie is to keep them from making an utter travesty of it, like casting Keanu Reeves as Crowley. (This has been suggested. Thus my enthusiasm for Laurie, even if he doesn't quite fit)

I'm saying this as non-bitchy as possible, seeing as the internet doesn't let that come across through text, but I have every right to come down on whatever just as you have every right to say whatever as do they.

I will say, that I'm not one of the many people that thing Keanu Reeves can't act. That said, I wouldn't want him 10 feet near Good Omens, but yeah.

Re: 172

That is your judgment, of course. The right you invoke is usually curtailed by politeness, but you are correct, it is a right to say what you please. I don't mean this in a bitchy way, either, but I think on this subject I will disagree with you.

Keanu Reeves can act in certain roles. But he's no Crowley.

I've never been one not to say what I think. :) Agree to disagree, of course.

That's exactly what I meant, he's no Crowley.

LOL I love how you threw in the part about having discussed it with both of the main authors. And how did you do that? While fangirling at them while you had them sign your book? Or maybe in a Q&A session where there was no chance of even getting close to them (aka there was no signing)? Did they agree with you? I'd bet they didn't.

You don't cast a veteran actor in a role just because you know he can deliver a good performance. He's also got to FIT the role as well. On the flip side, you don't cast an unknown actor simply because of their look. They should be the complete package.

There may be some extra thought besides the squeeing over these two actors, but its not very convincing. It feels like it's just what is used to defend it when your views are attacked, then once the troll-ish threat is gone, you all go back to your twittering and LOLBUTTSEX.

[identity profile] nirejseki.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
*roll eyes* Actually, no. I've had actual conversations with them. I have family in the publishing business, not that it's any of your business. Did I discuss this idea? Of course not. It never occurred to me. I love how you fixate on a single part of my point and immediately start with the ad hominim attacks, though, rather than assuming I might - heaven forbid! - have a reason to say them.

Given the current state of Hollywood, my reason for supporting a veteran actor which does somewhat fit the role - in my opinion, not yours obviously, but in mine - is better than the normal technique of putting an attractive and unfitting "popular" actor in the role. Of course they should be a complete package! Two unknowns which are chosen for their acting and their looks combined would be ideal. But that doesn't happen a lot nowadays, so I'd rather have two good actors who could pull it off do it.

However, since you have not bothered to put your username and have an actual conversation on the subject, I'll just leave the subject here.
