It's even worse when those same people are In The Heights stans. It's clear they're just upset that Hamilton has a big fandom while ITH (unsurprisingly) barely has one.

How is it racist?

OP

I’ve seen critics dismiss a woman as not really understanding what she was writing, and I thought that was sexist. I think this is the same issue. Authors and artists should be given enough credit to assume they’re doing at least some things on purpose.

I have not seen the play so I've been wondering that too.

I feel like what I've seen is less that it's racist per se, and more that it doesn't do a good job of addressing racism

IDK

The argument I've seen is that even though casting is inclusive it's still a play about white slaveowners doing things and no actual black people get their experiences shown (which may be true but tbh to me it always felt like that argument is basically saying they wanted it to be a completely different play and are mad LMM wrote the musical he wanted and not what they wanted).

The explanation I had heard is that you have PoC playing people who owned PoC.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that never happened in RL? Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
honestly i thought it was creepy that all americans were portrayed by poc and the brits were portrayed by white people. that's like very misleading on purpose?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Misleading as in you expect people not to know that these men were in fact all white IRL?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
DA but... I mean they are certainly a minority but I have actually seen some younger people be surprised about the actual race of several of those historical figures so... it happens?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
that seems an intentional bad faith reading of that.

no, misleading as in it invokes the struggle of poc in america without featuring actual historical poc, just through the framing.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-17 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Do you find all allegories misleading, or just this one?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-16 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
if ITH did anything for me it's ignite the conversation about the harmful undertones and optics in his works that we've NEEDED to have for ages so I'm grateful

Man I'm out of the loop; last time I looked, Hamilton was the wokest thing ever made and not liking it made YOU racist.

that sentiment always speaks to me of wanting to simplify complex media criticism, but it is pretty egregious to set a play in Washington Heights and then have barely any black Dominicans in the play. I do think that's endemic of a certain racist mindset, but the common one. The Friends and Seinfeld one.

anyway, let's see what happens with his other media endeavors. is everyone still the color of a paper bag unless he's trying to force critical thought on white people?
