102 Awesome

103 There's some great stuff on Yuletide.

104 I bet that if you said something a lot of fans would come out of the woodwork. A lot of adults watched Power Puff Girls back in the day.

115 Yeah, there's a fine line between using fannishness to get into something important, and being "lol y so srs?" about like, the future of our country.

128 Come on, it's a great show!

129 So a straight person speaking out about Prop 8 is more important than a gay person doing the same? Seriously? Also, I don't think many people writing RPS about him actually think he's gay. RPS isn't supposed to be predictive fic.

135 OMG, seriously, can everyone stop comparing their emotional reactions to unexpected real life events which are complicated and messy, and scripted fictional events in which your emotions are being carefully channeled and manipulated? NOT THE SAME THING. NO JUDGMENTS.

138 I'm a massive Sokka/Suki and Mai/Zuko shipper, but I'd read that.

148 Kubrick is massively overrated.

155 IAWTS! Especially his reaction, which was adorable and awesome.

157 That show is so poorly constructed it astounds me.

167 How great are they? And how much do fangirls suck that they never want to write judge fic? Gah, stupid idolslash.

180 Loving the old school rock shipping today. Complete with bad breakup and everything!

It's nice when people who aren't in the community say stuff. Especially when they point out that they have no dog in the race, so to speak.

It just feels weirdly hypocritical and cheap for him to have said straight out on TV "I'm not gay, and I don't have close relations who are" and for me to go read porn where he's gay.

No more hypocritical, I think, than just reading RPF in the first place. I mean, he's not gay—he's living with his girlfriend who's like, 25 or something (unless they broke up—I haven't paid much attention in about a year); Anderson Cooper likes Hispanic boys anyway; Stewart and Colbert are both married with children and live in Jersey. There's a way in which RPF is true to life, and a way in which it isn't, you know? And I think part of the pleasure is accepting the disconnect.

Eh, I'd disagree with you that people in that fandom don't take politics seriously. I'm only a lurker, but the vast majority of fans are perfectly aware where fandom ends and reality begins; just because they think Rahm Emanuel's hot doesn't mean they agree with his politics or even support him as a politician. Same goes for Obama, Pelosi, etc.

Sorry, that's what I meant by "there's a difference". Being just fannish about politics is really only a step past being a policy wonk. I totally agree that there are tons of people in political fandom that take it seriously. But there are definitely people who don't see past the ooh shiny cute to what the people they're slashing are actually doing.
