148: Preachy? How?

148 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-02-11 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
upon rethinking my word choice, perhaps 'preachy' wasn't exactly what i meant. my problem with the movie (and i'm having a hard time articulating what it is specifically that i dislike, so please excuse any confusion) is that it spends so much time telling the viewer what to think. i dislike this for two reasons. first of all, because when dealing with such universal subject matter (as in, not limited to this single situation), simply repeating your opinion over and over as if it were fact is not a valid argument. and secondly, because i feel like all of the conclusions that ARE supposed to be drawn ARE limited to the situation portrayed in the movie, which in itself is rife with holes and ridiculousness. overall, one needs to be SHOWN why such an opinion (in this case: that true evil cannot be unlearned) should be taken, not TOLD, with examples that lie in the midst of a silly, fictional story.

i really hope this comes across correctly.

that true evil cannot be unlearned

I didn't think that was the message of the film at all, so maybe that's why I don't agree with your point. (I don't like it either, but that's because the music makes me feel ill.). I thought it was pretty free of giving an opinion about Alex to the audience - I would have thought the fact that he's the protagonist and narrator would be indented to *prevent* the audience being able to make pat decisions about him and the events he is involved in.

in the larger sense, it is alot about the nature of free will, but i guess i don't understand how making alex the protagonist is supposed to prevent us from judging him - i feel like it's BECAUSE he's the protagonist that we're expected to be on his side; give him the benefit of the doubt, because the gang mentality made him do it, the drugs made him do it, his crappy home life made him do it, the music made him do it. i feel like there's a big chunk of the movie spent making us feel sorry for him - having his parents kick him out, his friends abandon him, the prison use him as a lab rat, etc. so that when it comes down to it, at the conclusion of the movie, we're supposed to feel like he just has no choice in the matter, not because he truly can't help himself, but because he has so much working against him. i mean even in the original book, he just "grows out of it", like it was just a phase, giving alex even LESS accountability for his actions.

Well, the point of the film and the book is more about whether the "treatment" they offer Alex is justifiable, rather than about Alex' actions themselves. I have never met anyone that feels Alex's life justifies his actions. I think its more a case of raising questions about hypocracy, education, religious leadership etc, in a very non preachy way, because at the same time as raising those questions Alex is still a little bastard who might be doing all these things just because they're fun.

I personally think that having Alex as the protagonist, (as well as a device for making the audience uncomfortable and question their own reactions about him) shows us that Alex has absolutly no intention of being good whatsoever. If Alex is still exactly the same inside, but his actions are now controlled, is the treatment acceptable?

The book's message is that Alex grows out of his behaviour which I think is ridiculous - I know its exaggerated but don't believe teenagers that behave violently grow up to be nice people most of the time. I think the film has a more interesting ending, because Alex *doesn't* grow up. He's still exactly the same as he was before, but now everyone's treating him like a martyr.
