Really? I the book I read, his death is tragically pointless and takes place long after his redemption (but before he has a chance to do anything unambiguously good enough to actually feel redeemed), and his last act in the land of the living is to send the son of the woman he loved to his death.
I want the book you've got, basically.

I hear ya. Sadly, we never learn exactly how he feels. I prefer the more optimistic view that perhaps he at least felt his death meant something, but maybe I am looking back with rose colored glasses. I haven't read it since it came out.
