179 -I believe that the fandom can redeem itself if the fic makes the books looks better. The canon on its own sucks IMO, but it has potential to the degree that I think fic can be great, if it fixes everything the canon fucked up so royally on. So I might give this a chance, just to see if it's worth all the reviews it's got.

::squealing Twilight fangirls rove past and one guy with his mom looks at them.::
Mom: Don't even think about it. They have the "Twilight".
That and it's 4am.
And agree w/ 147 as well. Because I *live* here. I've been to Disney 23 times in living memory. After about time 10, I was so done. I refuse to go now because I love the old movies so much and don't want to be filled w/ hatred every time I see the Corp. Rat's ears.
147 OP
(Anonymous) 2009-02-11 04:34 am (UTC)(link)Re: 147 OP
At WDW, I went in with the impression that people there would be just like the ones back in Anaheim, because we all received standardized training. But for every one or two nice, enthusiastic people who made the day fun or memorable, there were about five or six inattentive, grumpy people. I went into every store in the WDW parks and I rarely got asked if I needed any help. That shocked me, because that was MANDATORY at my store. We HAD to be attentive, help people with WHATEVER their request was, until it was filled or we knew 100% for a fact that it could not be. We HAD to pay attention to little details like if it's their birthday or are they newlyweds or is it their anniversary. At WDW, most Cast Members seemed to ignore me, except for the one guy in the Art building (who I told was a Cast Member) who spent the entire session MAKING FUN OF ME. Worse, at the hotel, I got hit on by an old Cast Member working at the registers. Talk about inappropriate!
My co-workers at DLR weren't bad (most of them, anyway), but it wasn't the best working environment. I thought that my bosses would be more understanding of my physical limitations, but I persistently got told that my doctor's notes weren't good enough and that I HAD to do things that hurt me more, and no, no matter how early in my shift I asked, I couldn't get my assignment switched with someone else, even if I asked that other person AND a lead.
I think it's one of those internships where people really have to think it through instead of thinking "Ooh, Disney!" and immediately imagining great things. Short of art and design people who get accepted into the internships for the studio or people who want to be an actor/singer/etc. and audition for an Entertainment role, I can't see how anyone with a declared major would take that internship and find something beneficial to apply to them. Sure, any major is accepted, but that's because the work has nothing to do with education or life skills for use OUTSIDE of Disney. The few classes I took (which were only once a month, btw) presented NOTHING I hadn't learned before in honor societies or conferences or University 101 courses. Maybe some people without my experience would have felt they got a lot more from the role I had, but I didn't enjoy it.
I did LEARN from it, though, and that's that I don't want to work retail, I don't want to work corporate (or at least not like Disney is structured), and I want to see a clear relation between my work and my goals. I don't regret doing the internship altogether, because I did meet some great people, but it wasn't the wonderful internship they made it out to be. Out of every hundred or more participants, I think only 10 or so might actually have that kind of experience. A ton of people in my program dropped out, got kicked out, or were miserable by program's end. And if the Disney program did a better job at screening its applicants and properly placing them, I don't think I (and they) would have had such a lousy time of it.
I want to keep Disney in a place of esteem in my heart, so I had to separate from the company to do that.
