just because he's made three new friends (under great duress, and having gone through a lot of shit together, and no less) and a better perspective on life, it doesn't mean he will not be any less of a loner. he'll just be a loner open to new ideas. his problem wasn't his social life. it was his downright acerbic attitude towards anything that wasn't his style. he hated people and living in the world. now he doesn't. and now, he's one of you -- a lone wolf who's comfortable with himself and others. it doesn't mean he's going to get close to everyone he meets from now on. he just won't look down on them.

Agreed, but in the last mission his 'most prized' thing was all people. Everyone. So, it struck me that he radically changed in that aspect.

He did radically change, but not entirely in the direction you might be thinking about. Not to read too deeply into it, but hear me out. He's acknowledging the right of other people to exist, not that he suddenly gained some all-encompassing kum-ba-yah attitude towards everyone, but because he's come to the basic recognition that it's okay for them to be around (and if you'll recall the opening sequence, he does state that he pretty much hates everyone, whether he's met them or not, and he preferred if they would all just die). It's what his whole apostrophe to Joshua at the end of the game was all about. Neku doesn't even pretend to like him or agree with him (note that not once does he call him a friend); he's just accepted that Joshua is a part of the world too, and even though he might be flawed or evil or wrong, he doesn't deserve any less of a place in it. He's opened up the opportunity for Joshua to make amends so they can become friends (or whatever they were by the end of the second week) again, but he hasn't gone as far to unconditionally accept him again.

Look at it this way, anon. Under the OP's argument, Neku's last price would have been his ability to make friends with people. That would have been both sickeningly didactic and an undermining of the message of the entire game.

That said, I think I understand the OP's want for a loner to not be type-casted as a redeemable woobie; after all, the who flow of the game does push Neku in that direction, even though I don't think it's the case. But then again, it would be a difficult game to play. After all, how would you get new party members? =) I doubt anyone would want allies forced on them. Then again, that's exactly what happened to Neku... thus the secret, rofl. Perhaps the OP would prefer a single-player shooter, or possibly a game like Vagrant Story, where the main character isn't necessarily a bad person for being alone. =| idk man fight da power you are the change you see etc.

About the problem that might appear in the gameplay/plot if the main character is a loner, I said earlier that one could make temporary alliances and even have acquaintances and yet still not be all 'friends are the meaning of my existence'.
