80s nostalgia is about the aesthetic, people know there was more going on and don't actually want to go back and live in the 80s. I was a 90s kid and glad I don't have to live through the 90s again but I still engage in nostalgia for the fun things that were popular back then. Being incredulous that people like the aesthetic of a decade because they're dumb is pretty disingenuous. You know you're overthinking it and looking at it from the wrong perspective, but you're too eager to be self-righteous about how you know better than them.

The aesthetic was hideous, the mainstream pop music was horrifying, and Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan are burning in hell. What's to be nostalgic about?

That's just like, your opinion man.

Being under ten and not realizing how much worse everything would get later, for some people.

The aesthetic and the music was fun, but agree wholeheartedly about Regan and Thatcher burning in hell.

You had something in the first part, because it truly is all about the aesthetic. But you're way too hostile in the second part. AYRT too never referred to anyone who's into 80s nostalgia as dumb, they're just incredulous about the phenomenon. I think their feelings about the decade are blinding them to the fun aspects about the trend, but it's totally understandable for someone who lived a hard life during the time.
