I prefer arse. To me it both sounds sexier and better for magical or not set in the modern world fandoms.

To me it sounds identical when spoken (or at least, it sounds like a Brit saying "ass" with the accent I'd expect), but seeing it spelled out comes across as waaay too harsh in my brain. Like a pirate or something--arrrrrrse.

That's strange. There's a notable difference in pronunciation when British people say Ass compared to Arse.

Or at least there is to me, I know non-Brits have trouble hearing the difference between what are WILDLY different British accents, so who even knows.

To me it really depends on the specific accent. In some cases it sounds very similar to ass, with the R very gently glided over, while in others the R is really leaned into.
