Yeah, I was nodding in agreement until I looked at the images. Censored into plausible deniability but still getting the point across as much as it can =/= platonic friendship.

Still platonic. I watched both shows and it was platonic, despite chupa-chups, NC-17 novels and all that.

Keep dreaming, homophobe.

You realize explicitly being romantic instead of plausible deniability gets people arrested in China right

You realize the intent is likely romantic with enough plausibility to NOT END UP IN FUCKING PRISON, right

Fucking Euro-Americentric morons

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm neither Euro or American. Sigh. Did getting on your high hourse and vilifying my answer made you happy? Like you accomplished something this way?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hey! I resent that! We aren't as bad as Americans when it comes to assuming that every culture is exactly like ours! Plus Europe (the EU?) is incredibly diverse to the extent that French culture has nothing to do with Polish culture whatsoever, to give you an example.

Which doesn't mean that we do not have any issues with racism, sexism or homophobia. We do but in a much different way from America and from each other.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
LMFAO Western Europeans are the worst I swear (Or are you Northern? You guys are pretty bad too).

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Why? Because we like to point out we're not American, we have different cultures to America, and we're aware that there are other cultures in the world and don't view everything through our own cultural lens like Americans do?

All of those are true, dude.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, you're the best, we got it, and your country is the best too.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
As a fellow European... come on. That comment would be fitting for a different discussion but casual racism against Asian people is pretty common and mostly invisible in the racism discussion because n9body cares enough.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
And it's unfortunate that it's that way because of censorship, but with that still comes the fact that it is, textually, platonic. The reason it had to be that way doesn't need to matter when you're looking at the canon and only the canon.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious as to what your critria for something being romantic is tbh, because if it's kissing and love-confessions(or NC-17 smut) then there are loads of M/F Wuxia couples that wouldn't count as romantic either.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Love confessions - depends. Kissing - depends, could be a "Let's pretend to be a couple" moment. A wedding or longing glances under cherry blossoms would do it in Wuxia, I guess. There's usually romantic music to clue a viewer in too. And oficial relationchip charts.
Heroin and Love Is More Than A Word are two Chinese tv series that come to mind.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
... So WKX/ZZS fit your criteria, but don't count because reasons? Because they have those scenes as well, not the fake-relationship and wedding-scene, but they're given a lot of other romantic tropes to make it very clear that they're meant to be a romance. Like the boys from LIMTAW don't kiss either and that wedding scene is given plausible deniability within the show in the same way these BL show do to skirt past the censors.

You want to insist WXK/ZZS aren't romantic then that's your prerogative, but a very weird one given that they hit what you're saying they should have.

Not even just Wuxia couples, there are plenty of those in Japanese media too.

Anything worth a rec?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but are you arguing the ships are platonic in the shows, just not the source material? Or are you arguing they're platonic in the novels too?

Considering the creative teams had as much of their canon relationships as they were legally allowed to keep, I'd still argue not platonic.

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
In TV of course, lol

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
They aren't platonic though. Seriously there are a couple anons on here that are willfully trolling or are refusing to see what is there. Also by refusing to see them as the romantic couples they are (within the censors) you're also like negating a whole bunch of asexuals who dont need to bump uglies to find romance?

You said it yourself - censors. So is it that surprising that some don't think there's romance?

Thank you for not writing erasing or ace-phobe or something along those lines lol. So how can we distinguish asexual romantic relationship from friendship in Chinese TV?

Re: +1

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
yup. ever since we've gotten secrets and discussions about these BL shows there's been a few very dedicated individuals who double down on insisting them not being romantic, and when examples are given of how they are, they shift the posts to act like they're still correct.

i don't know if they're bored trolls or homophobic, but it's gotten old.

Actually, Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu are presented as romantic through its visual medium. just because they don't say "I love you" or kiss doesn't mean that they're platonic. Just because you don't recognise it doesn't mean that the original intended audience doesn't or that it's not there.

I didn't know half of these tropes... I mean a friend would also jump off the cliff to save their friends, right?
There might be something with the hairpin though.

So you don't know the tropes used to express romance in these canons, but still feel knowledgeable enough to claim it's not romantic?
