You have seen the ending, right?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoot, was meant for 6. But...

If you're talking about Clerks which ending do you mean

I was obsessed with the main intro riff of this song as a child....

I feel exactly the same way. Sexist song, but it also completely portrays my feelings on living with a romantic partner.

I haven’t seen this in an age but, isn’t that the point? It’s demonstrative of his character arc that he goes from truly believing that to needing Eliza in his life. There would be no growth if he was a hip feminist from the jump.

Of course the through line here is that your cranky tune may also change if you meet the right person buuuut who knows.

OP

Yes, I get how it works within the story. I wasn't criticizing the characterization or the song, just feeling weird about how strongly I identified with the sentiments.

I love the songs in this musical, but gods do I hate how Lerner and Lowe changed the ending >:(

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
The author would have hated it as well.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, funny thing is I was under the impression Shaw lived long enough to see My Fair Lady and *did* hate it, but I just looked it up and he died a few years before it came out. I also learned that fans of Shaw are called 'Shavians', which sounds like a religious order from a high fantasy series.

See, I thought so too and originally wrote "the author hated it as well" and then was unsure and googled it (hey, tiny scale Mandela effect!). I think it's how he explicitly added a scene to make it very very clear that there would be no hope for the ship sailing and fought tooth and nail whenever someone tried to change it so yeah, he definitely would have hated it.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
I *think* it might be that there were people at the time he wrote the play who felt bad for the Professor and wanted Eliza to go back to him, and Bernard told them where they could stick it. I vaguely recall something along those lines.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
I vaguely remember some producer of the play(?) actually changing the ending due to popular demand and Shaw was PISSED (and thus added the new ending scene).

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I thought we were supposed to see this song as him being an arrogant old bastard who needed to learn a lesson

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. Hence me feeling a bit weird and uncomfortable about identifying so strongly with it, while having no desire to change.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
This would be entirely fair except that it's trope on trope about how dumb and shallow women are, not just about how he likes to be alone.

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Hence the cognitive dissonance and the reason this is a secret rather than something I’m proud of.

I have this mixed reaction of “ugh, I know, right? It’s terrible…people, with their habit of talking about stupid things and having to meet their relatives and generally intruding on my privacy” but also simultaneously “piss off, you sexist prick”

OP if you like musicals then maybe try watching the 2006 John Doyle production of Company. It's on YouTube right now.

I understand exactly what you mean, so try the pop song "Good Thing" by Kelani/Zedd.

(Anonymous) 2021-06-25 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the rec! Such a fun song.
