I've given a variant on that speech many times, and it seems to jump right out of me every time someone complains about the nominees. It's staggering how many people don't understand why the award is given at all, and why it's not "best dialogue spoken in the finished film." There are even a lot of Academy Members who don't get what they're supposed to do, which is why you get crimes like the typo-filled screenplay of Return of the King winning in 2004.

There were typos in The Return of the King's screenplay? Oh, God. I love that movie to bits, but that really saddens me.

I love the series, but the screenplay was...lamentable. I've blocked a lot of it from my mind for the sake of my sanity, but the one that's always stuck with me was the introduction of the Army of the Dead at Minas Tirith. Their ride is described, in full, as:

"A JAW-DROPPING SIGHT!!!"

At that point Jackson knew his job was safe, so I think he might have been coasting.
