101) Don't beat yourself up about it. Although it seems like giving honest criticism would be the decent and proper thing to do -- but most of the time it actually isn't. The truth is that very few people (even those who claim they want it) really want con-crit from strangers. And a lot of what is called con-crit is just criticism without the constructive part. Writers will often either ignore your advice (because they don't know how to implement it) or else disagree with your advice because it hurts their feelings. Offering your services as beta is a much more constructive use of your time -- that way you can build a relationship of trust with the writer and be able to tailor your advice to her needs, so it can be heard and understood.

106) Dude, even professional writers acknowledge that some fanfic is as well written (or better written) than the original. True those fics are few and far between, but even professional writers occasionally indulge in writing fanfic.

111) NEVER going to happen. Ever. Because there is no way to make it entertaining without offending the hell out of the evangelical crowd.

131) I agree. Felix's story arc is tragic and it's that way because his motivations were good and his heart was in the right place. The situation was morally ambiguous -- the solution is by no means clear. Had Felix won, he would have been considered a hero, and even though he lost, he might turn into a martyr. That's what I like about BSG it's not pure good vs pure evil -- it's survival by whatever means possible.

143) No, no, no, yes, no, no, no, no... I guess I'm just not BNF material. Hooray for being an average fan!

146) Aw. I absolutely love those kinds of documentaries. I think the people who get to do sounds have a damn cool job.

163) I used that fetish in one of my fics, but I doubt I did it in a way you'd find a turn on (It was part of a monster on guy tentacle porn -- er, yeah, I do lots of fetish writing). Anyway, I think what you need to do is get a hotmail account and not mind the weirdass ads. Google places that cater to your fetish (Literotica (http://www.literotica.com/) perhaps (though you may need to scrape the fandom off and pass it off as original fic).

131. Total word--you've expressed my feelings about this perfectly. I'm not in the fandom, but it makes me sad to hear people are apparently seeing Felix's recent actions in black and white, because I don't think they are meant to be seen that way at all: the situation is tricky, and his motivations are good. IMO, if the show just wanted us to hate someone, they would have had Zerek lead the insurrection by himself (though even Zerek is clearly a very complex character).

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought it very telling that Felix, in fact, had mostly taken over the insurrection from Zerek. Zerek is all ideas and bluster, but in the end he's just not that capable of a leader. He can convince people to follow him, but he can't follow through on it -- which is why he never achieves the top spot, and why he spends so much time being locked up. He's all idealism, not enough practicality and thought.

We can demonize Zerek's incompetence (as is shown by the fact that his plan B was to kill the elected counsil -- essentially destroying the very thing he wants), but we can't demonize his core idea: to get rid of the cylons. Because Adama's plan is a huge gamble, made undemocratically in private, which if misjudged could easily mean the extinction of all humans.

BSG could just have easily and believably framed Adama and Roselin as the bad guys -- They are all but dictators, and the entire race is held hostage to their ideas -- ideas which have been apparently wrong. (Earth)

I'd actually be interested in reading your fic! (You write for the FMA fandom, right?)

And thanks, I'll keep both of those in mind.

Yeah it's Gate/Envy (http://velvet-mace.livejournal.com/196062.html), and it's got a couple of other fetishes thrown in for good measure.
