People have prior relationships, they sleep around, they have open relationships, they have OTHER PEOPLE. OTPs aren't in vacuums.

For example: My OTP is Scourge/Cyclonus. But (in personal canon) Cyclonus also has loyalty-bordering-on-love for Galvatron and occasionally sleeps with him, and has had flings with Ultra Magnus in the past. Scourge, prior to the consumnation of the OTPness, has also slept with other people. I can read or write any of these and still have the OTP preserved.

That's entirely different. Having an OTP doesn't mean you pick two people from canon who have no other attachments and are only ever into each other. How would this even work when the OTP might not even work out in canon? That said, even if you also value all the non-OTP relationships less and would not mind if they didn't exist, I have a hard time seeing how the one relationship can be considered an OTP for you. As I've said before, you may prefer it to all the others, but you're still different from the folks who only like two certain characters shipped together.

OTPs not existing in vacuums? What about non-romantic emotional relationships? Unless you're going for 'fucked up', aren't people more likely to have these than to sleep around and have open relationships?

Look, your average (modern, western) person is likely to at least have a few dates before they settled down. They may even fall in love more than once. That doesn't make their affection for their eventual other half any weaker.

Open relationships aren't necessarily fucked up, if you're writing in nonhuman cultures.

That has nothing to do with the concept of an OTP, which is about how you feel about a pairing, and only tangentially related to how the characters in the pairing feel about each other and other people in their lives. If you like one character shipped with several different people (maybe on different levels, but still), it's safe to say you don't have an OTP for that character. There's nothing wrong with that.

Have it your way then. It makes sense on a case by case basis, but I was surprised to find that brought out to argue against people being exclusive.

There's a difference between "exclusive shipping" and "allowing that that specific character changes over time and may have fallen in and out of love at different periods before finding their One True Love". They're still my OTP. They just aren't in a vacuum.
