Not book or fic, but this is one of the reasons I quit watching daytime soap operas. One can only use poor communication as a plot device for so long before it gets old.

Castle, this is Castle.

I think that's my #1 example of Slow Burn gone wrong. At the end of season 2 was the spot they needed to get together and of course, by the time they did in Season 5, the writers never knew what to do with Beckett so the relationship quickly fell on its nose.

But yeah, this is exactly the opposite way than I'd write a slow burn. Miscommunication is one of my pet peeves since childhood trauma yadda yadda.

There will always be a small part of me that will forever be angry at how dirty Castle did Beckett. I loved her, she was fucking great, and yet as the show went on she got shoved into the background, only existed to be Castle's girlfriend/wife and it just sucked. I never finished that show because of how badly it bungled the romance and the female lead.

I wrote the text post that became this secret, and I agree with you. I was mainly thinking of fanfiction at the time, but the relationship drama in Castle basically ruined the show for me.

Yeahhhh been there. It's especially annoying when they finally get together but it's at the very end so you don't even get a rewarding conflict resolution and the fic is 90% miscommunication/angst and 10% actual relationship.

Sleepy Hollow!! Sleepy Hollow! I get that Ichabod was married for two seasons, but his wife was written out in season two, and in season three Uchabod and Abbie were hardly in the same room together and when they were Ichabod was usually narrating a flashback so we never saw them do things together. The chemistry between the leads was hands down the best thing about that series and the show just ABANDONED it.

I have never seen such a delightful show go so thoroughly off the rails so fast, and most of the reason was how horrendously they handled the two leads. Slow burn would have been so much better than total immolation.

I will never for the life of me understand why that show decided to implode like it did. Like as far as I know almost everyone was on-board with Ichabod/Abbie, the audience, the cast, and yet the show just... wouldn't go there in the worst ways possible and years later I am still so angry and boggled over it all. They had a fucking gold-mine on their hands yet ruined it and none of us know why.

SA-- YES. Abbie/ Ichabod was the most obvious but there were so many things about that show that I loved and they ruined every single thing. I quit on it halfway through season three but I still frothed at the mouth over what they did to Abbie. What was WRONG with those people??

I will drag that show for what it did to Abbie to my grave tbh, she was done so horribly and it still makes me so angry. It could have sustained itself as such a wonderful, goofy show, but devolved into that fucking mess. Ugh.

I mean, this is sorta speculation and sorta stuff Nicole has said, but essentially the production team (probably the second showrunner on imo) got mad that people liked her and her character more than Tom, straight up tried to manipulate her into thinking she was replaceable so she wouldn't ask for better treatment, and essentially punished her for getting sick (Tom was also sick and got recovery time/Nicole didn't and developed a chronic condition) by treating her as if she were just lazy and lying about it. In other words, vile racism. Abbie's on screen treatment was more a collateral consequence of, and perhaps a punishment for, that.

Oh god, if even half of that is true it's just so... erugh. I don't keep up with bts stuff for the shows I watch so I never knew about any fuckery going on in the background, I just knew that the actors seemed 100% on board and the audience wanted it, but knowing that it could have been a showrunner or writer upset that people liked Abbie of all things. Christ. I only hope the actress is in a better place with better projects.

But yeah that's absolutely horrid racist bullshit that had gone on there. Jesus.

It was pretty much a buddy cop-type show, IIRC, so it's mind-blowing that a showrunner would get mad that audiences liked one of the two LEADS. Sorry they liked her more than your favorite I guess?

Original SH anon-- ALSO! In the first episode Annie was positioned as the MAIN main character! She was the one we were supposed to relate to! And the showrunner got mad because we DID?

In fairness I think they replaced the showrunner for season 2. That's when they started to write out the BIPOC characters. So no, no e of it was a coincidence.

I wasn't diehard Ichabod/Abbie and would've been content with them being BFFs and partners but I absolutely hate what that show did to Abbie and their partnership. It was so mind blowingly dumb. Like how did you mess that up so bad? How do you not get that Abbie is every bit as important to this show as Ichabod is? It's like you're TRYING to destroy what could've been a fun show.

Yeah, this. I didn't even make it through all of season two because I heard about season 3 and went "ahaha nope fuck this."

Honestly from some of the cast comments it sounds like some of the higher up producers or something were racist shitstains.

Season one was such awesome fun cheese, it's the only one I own.

I will DIE MAD about Sleepy Hollow. Fortunately I found Lucifer which is a very similar vibe with pretty much everything done right, but I really loved Tom and Nicole's chemistry, and nothing will change the way the SH production team did Nicole dirty. No excuse for it. Just plain racist.

I get it, sometimes it's hard to talk about stuff or face your emotions or WHATEVER, but stop making the assumption that your crush is madly in love and marrying random person because they sat at a table with them and laughed/called them/had them in their phone contacts/made eye contact.

Ugh, exactly. I don't have much patience for idiots in real life, and I definitely don't want to deal with it in the media I consume. Especially when it's idiots and idiotic misunderstandings labeled as "slow burn". THAT'S NOT WHAT SLOW BURN IS.

I have a higher threshold for most for bad communication and wild assumptions (because i wondered in rl how bad people are just using my own surroundings.....and they are really fucking bad omg), but narratives simply can't sustain rl terrible decision making like real people imo and still feel realistically happy. You gotta build it into character very well if you're going to let your pairing be miserable about nothing for that long.
