Abandon the works. Or turn off notifications.

as the other commenter said, Abandon the work or turn off comments. If people are still commenting then obviously people are still enjoying it. It'd be a nice way to let that continue without having to have anything to do with it.

How does abandoning the fics work in practice? Does it delete all signs of the original author even from the replies to the comments?

I don't know the answer to that. I would have to look at the FAQ on the site.

I hope you don't delete them. I read old fics all the time. Not everybody has a big huge hard drive to download every fic they ever read.

I love getting kudos on old fics. I didn't have kids; this is my legacyyyyy.

<3 Same! I was writing in actual popular fandoms ten years ago instead of a dead one, and if it wasn't for the fic I wrote ten years ago, I would get comments/kudos maybe once or twice a month. It makes my day start out a little better every morning to get notification that people are still reading and enjoying the old stuff at least, so maybe the lack of engagement on the new stuff isn't because I suck. :D

If I wrote something 10 years ago that people still cared about, I'd be thrilled.

Just orphan the fics if they're on A03. Then other people can keep enjoying the stories but their positive, supportive attention (the kind of thing a lot of other authors have been dying to get for years and wouldn't take so for granted) won't bother them anymore.

Orphan the works, turn off comments, or shift the works to an alternate/throwaway account you don't check. As long as you don't mind the works continuing to exist for people to read, I'd encourage you to leave them up for weirdos like me who wander into fandoms 15 years late with Starbucks.

Seconding this comment.

+1

As a forever late newcomer people who keep their stuff up either way are a gift.

This! I read a fic from 1996 last week. So grateful for the author!

I just filter my AO3 kudos and comments emails into a hidden folder. I don’t want to orphan my stuff and definitely don’t want to delete it but like you I don’t want to engage with it, either. This way I have the option to check in on the stuff or re-engage if I choose.
