Meanwhile, I'll never understand how people can devote so much time to just hating on something. Eh, different strokes I guess.

You've never vented about something? I don't do it for fandom, but I can very easily understand why people feel the need to vent to others who would understand. IMO, it'd be more weird if people never felt that need, but kudos to them, I guess.

Seconding this so hard.

To be honest, I tend to feel a little stifled by the current, unspoken but prominent "positivity only" attitude in fandom. I mean, obviously fandom has antis, and it also has social justice discourse, which are both largely negativity-based, but if your negative opinions/feelings about a thing aren't anti-ish or political--if you just don't like something and you kind of want to talk about it--there isn't much of a place for that in current-day fandom. Sure, you can post about it on tumblr, but even if you "tag your hate," and take care to express your opinions thoughtfully, and say "IMO" a lot, and only express negativity about things not people, and basically do everything right, just the simple fact that you're expressing negativity about something is often kind of frowned upon.

It's all very "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all," and I just personally find that so exhausting and, for me, it doesn't feel emotionally healthy.

I definitely DO feel like if you spend all or even a majority of your time being negative about things, that's going to be unpleasant for the people around you, and it's also probably not healthy for you either. It's cliché, but the whole "be defined by what you love, not what you hate" advice is, for the most part, really good advice, IMO. That said, feeling negatively about some things, and thinking critically about those things and why I don't like them, is also a part of me, and I really don't like it when expressing oneself is treated as invalid, or met with hostility, unless one's self-expression is positive.

It really depends on what fandom you are in. Some, like Star Wars and Doctor Who, are massively filled with negativity and in fact these days are more negative than positive, with people who want to be positive being the ones who get told they are wrong and should be quiet.

This. So much. -Thank you-.

I mean, it does say "every once in a while". Not "every moment of the day".

Eh, I was part of Twilight fandom while also being part of an anti-Twilight fan board. I mean...the sporking of the actual book tended to be hilarious, and of some fanworks as well (looking back, a lot of them were likely mean spirited, everybody's just trying to have a good time). Sometimes to vent about stupid things about the books/series/characters. That said, I still wrote fic! I still read it too! And I enjoyed the trash that those books were too! I even went to a local final book launch party! It was all fun until the end. I'm still mad about the end.

Idk. I can enjoy a piece of media and still have my gripes about it, and rant about it from time to time.

Oh hey, I was in the same boat as you back in the day! I still love Twilight (well, the first book 'cause the second and third were just okay and the fourth one was super terrible), but there was a lot in it that made me want to bang my head against the wall and it was kinda nice to be able to go somewhere where I could complain about it.

Complaining about something "every once in a while" seems like a lot of time to you? Really?

(Anonymous) 2021-06-29 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll never understand how people can pretend like they're completely unfamiliar with the concept of venting because of course, they're soooooo above complaining about anything ever.
