Haven't seen this one before. I guess I'm not in a lot of fandoms that take place in times and places where planes exist. (Or coathangers, for that matter.)

canon ≠ cannon drives me insane and it's super common too

Great secret design, and I'm in a couple of aviation fandoms and this drives me batty as well.

It's 'taut' and 'taught' for me.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-01 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's "crumpled" and "crumbled" for me. Most of the other common typos don't really stick in my craw, and "bread" and "bred" have led to some unintentional hilarity.

Yes! Crumpled and crumbled, omg.

I need to be in more fandoms where people talk about hangars....

I'm guessing OP is a Gundam fan.

Breath and breathe used wrong get on my nerves. You take a breath or share a breath, but you breathe in a breath of fresh air.

"Bob couldn't breath" is WRONG.

Weary/wary is one of my least faves. "X was weary of the dangerous stranger" NO THEY WERE NOT THEY WERE *WARY*

For me, it's whinny and whiny.

My favorite of those is "baited breath". ...Yeah that doesn't sound like it would smell good. :D

Shuddered vs. Shuttered is the one I see most of that bothers me, aside from the one in the secret (hi Star Wars fandom, y'all also have a problem with using 'New Republican' instead of just 'New Republic' as it should be, but that one at least seems to be getting corrected more than it used to.)

"Waste" and "waist" gets me.

"Rogue" and "rouge." How is this so common? They don't even sound similar!

The deadly touch of a mutant makeup artist.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
"lose" and "loose." If you get those wrong, the odds I take you seriously drop like Wile E. Coyote when he realizes he's not walking on the ground.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
you should prob get used to it. You'll never, as hard as you want to or try, get people to stop doing it. in fact, in my experience, the more it irritates you, the more people will continue to do it. For me, it *used* to be blonde vs blond, but it got so common that I knew it was pointless to keep bringing it up and now it just sort of washes over me and I barely notice.

One of my worst fic pet peeves is getting trendy, and I realized in horror that there's nothing I can do and it's only going to get worse.

Loose and lose...I have NO idea how you mix those up (and I'm sure I've done far worse oopsies), but MAN. Gets me every time and throws me out of a story fast!

Using discrete instead of discreet drives me up the wall.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Or phase instead of faze - yes, I suppose it is true enough that your character isn't 'phased', but that's just because they are not syncing up or adjusting or scheduling change to anything, not because they are not disconcerted.

I don't like the bear/bare swap or the passed/past one, but they don't get under my skin quite the same way.

Peak/peek doesn't bother me so much, but using either of them in place of pique puts my teeth on edge.

I am always just kind of surprised by principal/principle, but I guess some schools never did that "It's princiPAL because they are your pal."

The steal/steel swap weirdly amuses me.

And I know English is weird, but advice, a noun, has an 's' sound while advise, a verb, has a 'z' sound and advice is a suggestion from someone for a situation, while advise is the act of giving that advice.

'Conscious' and 'conscience' for me.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Recently saw hare written as hair in a published book, and what made it even worse was that it said "the white hair" - you know, the one from Alice in Wonderland who is in fact a rabbit and neither hair nor hare.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-02 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's weary/wary and wonder/wander for me. Nails on a chalkboard.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Defiantly instead of definitely.

Lead when it should be led.

Persay and all other variations of per se.
