Well, in the afterward to the original play that Shaw wrote, he said she married Freddy and got her flower shop in the end,so there is that

This approach to writing strikes me way too much as the "I hate my spouse" era of television, back when (straight) couples having on screen arguments all the time was the main dynamic out there. A lot of fictional romance still sucks but I'm glad we've moved past this stuff at least.

Freddy was an idiot who didn't even know Eliza and "fell in love" with her after like only an hour because he was charmed in a very patronizing "Isn't she precious" sort of way by her odd speech. I'll take neither, thanks.

Yeah, this is kind of my answer too.

I agree with OP that Jeremy Brett is very handsome. But even then, I prefer him a little older.

Sherlock Holmes Jeremy Brett is just so...*bites lip and sighs*

+100

Sure, but if you're settling anyway, why not settle for the obscenely wealthy cutie pie who wants to dote on you instead of the moderately wealthy old crank who treats you like his housekeeper?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Because you're more likely to outlive Higgins.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
This was more or less what Shaw had to say on the subject.

"Now Freddy is young, practically twenty years younger than Higgins: he is a gentleman (or, as Eliza would qualify him, a toff), and speaks like one; he is nicely dressed, is treated by the Colonel as an equal, loves her unaffectedly, and is not her master, nor ever likely to dominate her in spite of his advantage of social standing...

Will she look forward to a lifetime of fetching Higgins's slippers or to a lifetime of Freddy fetching hers? There can be no doubt about the answer. Unless Freddy is biologically repulsive to her, and Higgins biologically attractive to a degree that overwhelms all her other instincts, she will, if she marries either of them, marry Freddy.

And that is just what Eliza did."

Wow, I'm actually impressed. Yes!

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
So Eliza's a canon-confirmed idiot too? Cool. They'll make a good couple, then.

YUP

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well. I guess I'll pluck out my eyes and have a lobotomy, then. And I'm not proud of it, but here we are.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find your Henry Higgins one day. It's not as though snobby older academics who treat women like staff are all that difficult to find.

this strikes me as the Phantom of the Opera problem, where yes one of the rivals is objectively the better choice, but is still a deficient choice in some respects.

I just (have to) imagine Freddy was one of those men who was open-minded to off-beat relationship dynamics that would allow a deep abiding respect to grow alongside his love (which isn't difficult for me considering how many historical romances I read) and go with Shaw.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-03 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen it, and learning that this fine-looking fellow is NOT the one she ends up with is enough of a reason to never see it.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-04 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Higgins is a "confirmed bachelor." I don't think he was ever intended to be a love interest for Eliza.
