co-op games recommendations - help a nonnie out?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-06 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! I'm looking for co-op or multiplayer online games to play with just another person; I'm in America and they are in Europe so it'd necessarily have to be an online game. Do anons have any recs?

What is your price range and what types of games do you like? Voice chat or just text chat for communications?

I'm good with anything that doesn't have massive amounts of DLC and within the 30 bucks price range at most, VC preferred but we could do both. I dunno if it's also important to add this but I am not sure neither of us can handle a massive commitment like FFXIV and the like, asides that the only restriction would be no real time strategy stuff nor farming simulators. Thanks for your question btw

Not sure what you are on. PC or console. If on PC, most of these are on sale on Steam right now. These are also all games I have played.

Overwatch (Team Based Shooter) is fun and it goes on sale a lot. Fun cast of characters and game modes. Mystery Heroes is pretty relaxing. Has voice and text chat.

Apex Legends (Battle Royale). Free to play. It is a battle royale with voice chat.

Human Fall Flat (Puzzle Platformer). Fun puzzle game where you have to work together to get through maps with your floppy characters. No built in voice chat. I use skype on PC and xbox group.

Monster Hunter World (Action RPG). You hunt monsters alone or in groups. A fun variety of creatures. Has voice chat. Dauntless is a ftp knockoff.

Sea of Thieves (First person action). Fun game where you sail around the map completing missions, killing skeletons, getting into battles with other players, and sometimes being terrified by the kraken.

Diablo 3 (Hack and Slash RPG). Just what the genre says. Not sure if it has built in voice chat.

Destiny 2 (Multiplayer shooter). Similar to Monster Hunter where you get together with your group to go on missions. Free to play. Has voice chat.

Overcooked 1 or 2 (Co-op cooking game). Fun game where you work together to complete meals. AFAIK doesn't have in game voice chat.

Minecraft. Not sure if I need to explain more. I am not a huge fan but I have played it. It takes a certain type of person.

Ooooh, thanks a bunch for this list! Out of all of these Apex Legends and Human Fall Flat seem super interesting, and I didn't know Diablo also had a Multiplayer mode. The person I want to play games with has already completed all of overcooked but I personally want to get around those myself.

Since you're bringing up Sea of Thieves and Destiny 2 allow me to ask: How bad is the grifting on SoT? We had an eye on it but heard that there's a lot of that esp around players who are still trying to learn the ropes of the game. And regarding Destiny 2, does it include things like DLC or is it actually the whole game?

Thanks for your time.

I believe the DLC costs extra for Destiny 2 but isn't that necessary.

In regards to SoT, we never had too many problems with being hassled. It helps that as two players, you would be using the sloop. It is faster against the wind than larger boats and far more maneuverable.

To lessen griefing, just turn in your loot often so you don't got a ton to lose. If your boat is destroyed, you can just call up a new one for free so you don't lose much if nothing is on it.

Ah, I see! Tbh we were really drawn to sea of thieves but the negative reviews mentioning the griefing put us off it, I will bring it up again to my gaming partner. We might as well pick up Destiny 2 too since it's free and convenient. I will keep your input in mind, thanks!

Anon from below

You'll always run across some buttholes in open world games but my friends and I have never had too many issues in SoT. In fact, the first ship we were attacked by apologized and returned my stuff when I mentioned it was literally 'our first day'. xD

On our second time playing, I had some dude on Xbox message me, "You need to check your ship more often." He had hid on our ship for 20 minutes listening to our conversations before swimming away. xD

Hahaha, that's really nice of them at least! As I replied above, it's an actual relief o hear the game is not as bad as some reviews made it seem to be. If I can convince my gaming partner we'll pick it up.

Would also throw in Dead by Daylight and Phasmophobia if you're into "scary" stuff! :)

Definitely seconding Sea of Thieves though (and recommend playing it in proper pirate mode: shitfaced).

Thanks for your recs! Dead by Daylight seems to have a thriving community from what I've seen friends playing on steam, too. And the pirate mode suggestion has been duly noted.

Ooh, I just remembered, if farming sims are your thing, Stardew Valley has a coop mode now too! :D

I could go for some Stardew Valley, sadly my partner does not (previous bad experiences with other farming simulators basically). Might as well start a solo campaign on the side haha, thank you!

Valheim's great if you like building, forging, exploring and fighting (especially for an early release game). You can play single player or with up to 10 other folks. Not sure about VC but you can chat in game. Warning: it's also considered a survival game.

It's the very first time I hear of this, thanks for bringing it up! I'll have to check with my person if they are up to the challenge but it seems pretty fun given what you describe.

I like the We Were Here series (co-op puzzles) - similar to an escape room where solving puzzles unlocks other rooms, except you start out in different rooms. Communication’s important! The first one’s free - it’s not as polished as the following ones (the player roles are more rigid with one doing more exploration and the other finding answers, plus a couple puzzles aren’t colorblind-friendly), but it gives a good taste of the series’ gameplay.

I played the first game a long time ago but didn't think of checking if there was more games. As far as I remember the original itself was pretty fun so I hope the next installments will be better. Thanks anon!

'It Takes Two' is an absolutely phenomenal co-op game. Gameplay is super smooth, the graphics are gorgeous and the game features a 'Friend Pass' so only one of you needs to own the game and the other can play for free.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes - A bomb diffusing puzzle game. One player can only see the bomb, the other only has the diffusing manual. This one is all about good communication.

Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime - Explore a colourful galaxy in a massive neon battleship that you control together. Only through teamwork can you triumph over evil and avoid a vacuumy demise.

'Terraria' is a classic. You can easily spend hours just exploring, mining, crafting and building in a randomly generated world.

Thank you for your recs anon! I saw pretty good things about It Takes Two while browsing the co-op tag, and the friend pass is a big (budget) advantage as well. Teamwork games are always pretty engaging when compared to versus one, I'm looking forward to test this whole list out.

Mandatory: "Terraria has co-op, too??" comment.

Sorry for the late reply, if you see this.

Every single element of It Takes Two relies on teamwork. And always in surprisingly different and fun ways. There's a whole bunch of competitive mini games to play as well but just for fun - they don't affect the theme of teamwork at all.

Terraia has had local co-op and online multiplayer since about 2013 I think. I haven't tried it myself but I have watched other people have a whole lot of fun with it. Gameplay is still the same but you can invite people to your world to help mine, build and fight bosses. You can also set up and play Capture The Flag with teams inside the game.

Same poster. I also forgot to mention this game.

'Biped' is a cute little exploration game where you play two little robots sent to a planet to find and reactivate a series of beacons. It has tons of cool mechanics and obstacles the require teamwork to pass.
