I don't know what fandom you're in, and I'm kind of curious, because to be honest this sounds a lot in your head.

While there are some people that do it for clout, most people I see that draw white characters of other races do it because they want to see representation of themselves or just see how it looks. There are some that do it for clout, sure, but so many of those that do it are of the former group and get insanely gross and racist reactions.

And nowhere do I see people mad that someone drew a white character white.

Harry Potter is big for this I think.

Anon above mentioned harry potter...I've seen discourse of this type in several book fandoms actually, mostly the kind set in European settings where the characters are mostly very obviously part of the dominant culture and/or are described with features that are common to European ethnic groups but rare in other ethnic groups but the author didn't specifically say "and this character had pasty white skin"

All of this, plus: People who racebend white casts do for the most part also support things with diverse casts and things with nonwhite creators. You really don't have to be either/or about it.

Staying with Harry Potter, I have definitely seen people get very rude messages for not drawing Harry or James as Indian.

Really? God almighty.

I know they do this because Harry is the main character and they want to see an Indian main character. (Since the Patil sisters and okay, all the minor Indian, Chinese, and well, one black character mentioned ((Zabini)) weren't done well.) I'm just surprised they don't ALSO racebend Goyle to Indian.

Since... Goyle is an Indian surname.

Whereas Potter is English, German, or Dutch.

Or is it because Goyle as a secondary antagonist and that doesn't fit the narrative. Oh my.

I've seen something like this in Star Wars fandom of all places...someone drew fan art of Luke as a Black man and when someone didn't recognize the character and asked about it the artist said they had "a different headcanon for Padme." Which kinda struck a bad note for me, like okay so in the name of diversity you got rid of the Jewish woman and kept the white guy...okay. But it didn't make sense to me anyway since the only Luke and Padme that "exist" were played by particular persons, so that's kinda just how they look?

No offense but the black Star Wars characters that exist kind of suck. And we should criticize the writers/producers/casting directors for that, not fans for liking better characters.

This. A lot of times there isn't a wide variety of characters to choose from. And in manga/anime, the few Black/darkskinned characters also have a tendency to have racist caricature features or have such ambiguous racial features that people will still criticize people drawing them Black

?? Finn doesn't suck any more than the rest of the sequel trilogy characters. They're all pretty shallow and one-note (Rey and Kylo included), it's not like any of them are better than the others.

Even John Boyega thinks his character was written worse than the white characters.

This is exactly why it always feels fake and performative to me. I've seen plenty of people racebending characters from canons that HAVE major POC characters and totally ignoring the actual canon POC characters that exist.

I suspect they didn't want to make the bad parent the Black one.

This sounds a lot like the Good Omens fandom. So performative it circles back to racist.

Genuine question, on which platform are you engaging with the GO fandom? Because for me it's been like, pun not intended considering the subject matter, absolute heaven. It's such a chill fandom, in my experience.

(Then again I am quite trigger happy when it comes to blocking, so if there were shit-stirrer in the fandom I likely simply never saw them due to my 1-strike-you-are-out policy)

Yeah I'm not into that kinda stuff. I'm an ethnic minority, I don't give a crap about the race. I'm there for the characters.

This reminds me of when a published fantasy writer had to make an apology and/or fuck you (I can't remember which lmao) post on tumblr because fans were being v e r y aggressive about their POC headcanons of white as hell characters.
