What are your favorite underrated or less popular villains in media?

No Joker, Sauren, or Hans Gruber allowed here!

After rewatching parts of Neverending Story yesterday, Gmork was so scary (especially for kids). https://youtu.be/5sEZmMeH96Q

Sander Cohen was far scarier to me than Andrew Ryan and Fontaine in Bioshock.

Also, nothing scared me more as kid than triggering a Redead in Ocarina of Time. https://youtu.be/T4h3pajUxX4

Gmork was badass. His speech is good in the book too. And fuck those redead things. Scary as shit.

The Redeads viscerally scared me every time.

Part of me wishes that Shadowbringers (FFXIV) wasn't locked behind like 300+ hours of gameplay that is very necessary to have under your belt for context, because Emet-Selch is one of the best-written villains I have come across in any media, period. I want everyone to experience it, but it is such an undertaking, and I am fully aware it's not one that most people are going to be open to. Sigh.

Agreed. I was legitimately sobbing at the end because defeating him didn't really feel like a VICTORY in any way. It just felt incredibly sad and tragic.

"Rest assured, if your heart can be broken, so can mine!" is a line that's going to stick with me for a long time, especially considering the further context we got in 5.3. Just. Ugh. So good.

The Ice Warriors are my favorite Doctor Who antagonist, though unfortunately they've never really been done justice in Nu-Who. The three Classic Who stories that they're in - The Ice Warriors, Curse of Peladon, Monster of Peladon - create this really interesting society that I wish would have a great episode again. They go from straight-forward "honor-obsessed warrior race guys" in Ice Warriors to reasonable allies in Curse of Peladon to a society caught between tradition and modernity in Monster of Peladon. Empress of Mars in season 10 of Nu-Who was ok, but you have to really dig into the books, comics, and audios to find their best stuff. If you've watched the three Classic Who stories and want more of them I'd suggest the Big Finish audio Prisoner of Peladon (great continuation of the themes of Monster of Peladon) or the short story Crimson Dawn from Decalog 2: Lost Property (if you can find it, lmao).

My favorite villain, and the scariest episode of Doctor Who for me, is the creature from Midnight. Such a good episode.

Darken Rahl from Legend of the Seeker. They took a fairly flat book villain (although TBH I still like the first book) and made him complex and really interesting but still a full-on villain. I love him. Craig Parker does such a great job.

Ungolient is a lesser-known Tolkien villain, and she's pure creepy awesome.

Zandramaz from the Mallorean.

Kroenen from the first Hellboy movie is terrifying.

Leareth from the Herald of Valdemar is delightfully creepy (all the reincarnations of Ma'ar are great as is Ma'ar himself, but Leareth is my favorite).

Morden from Babylon 5 is great, but even more creepy and amazing is the one-off villain from season 2's Come's the Inquisitor, Sebastian.

Saren Arterius, always.

He's basically the reason why I've never picked Synthesis in ME3 as I feel otherwise there would be no point in ME1&2, since it's precisely what he wanted back in ME1.

Gabriel Lorca from Discovery - if you do consider him a villain, that is.

I really like ruthless characters, especially in a position of power. Plus, I've never found Jason Isaacs hotter, not even as Lucius Malfoy.

Lorca was *great*. Intense, smart, worked well with the themes of s1. A++ Would recommend.

I don't know if he's technically underrated because I'm pretty sure that literally everyone who has played Suikoden 2 thinks Luca Blight was terrifying and amazing. Just, you know, there are a lot of people who haven't played the Suikoden games.

Vayne in Final Fantasy XII gets some major points for basically pulling off the "turning myself into a villain for the sake of my family" thing but genuinely being a villain and not the slightest bit sympathetic. (I absolutely do not buy the late-game implication about his intentions. If anything, he and Venat were both playing each other.)

Also speaking of Ivalice, of course there is my pet fandom, Vagrant Story, where I love every single character in some capacity, including the villains. I have come to appreciate Guildenstern a lot more than I initially did in the early years, having seen more nuance in his character with repeated playthroughs. And Rosencrantz is just the most disgusting vile triple-crossing scumbag, utterly devoid of any sort of honor or morality, and he does it with such GLEE - which means I love to hate him and I also love to write him. (And I would include Sydney, but... it's not much of a spoiler to note that less than halfway through the game, it's already obvious that while he's an antagonist and definitely not a good guy, he's not a villain, no matter how delightfully creepy he is.)
