English is my second language, and I ploughed through all of the three books with gusto and enjoyed them. Even listened to the audiobook of the first one and had fun.

It's possible that, given the way Mantel has written them, that the more formal language training helped you and those who have picked up the language more colloquially struggle by comparison?
