[Pride and Prejudice]

I feel like this is a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? Because you don't agree?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Probably because the 1995 miniseries has a lot of fans who consider it their quintessential Elizabeth and Darcy. There's no need to assume ayrt is being unreasonable until such a time if/when they behave as such, right?

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and there is also no need to assume that someone is a troll just because they don't agree with a popular opinion.

No, because the wording seems as if it's been pitched to be deliberately provocative in that way that troll secrets often do.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I for one always word my secrets strongly. Otherwise they are not very interesting, too polite and quite mild.

And I hate the recent trend to call everything troll here.
These people are so narrow minded that they cannot imagine someone having a different opinion. "No, they must be a troll..."

OP Here

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't a troll secret, but thanks for reducing it to such. Sorry for having strong opinions that I don't want to openly share lest I be attacked. That worked well, clearly.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't dislike miniseries Lizzie, but yeah, I basically agree about the smug vibe.

+1

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot agree more strongly. Jennifer Ehle is my Elizabeth Bennet.

*sigh* Of course, I meant disagree.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-14 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I love her. I guess Darcy is nice too, but to me the highlight of watching the 1995 adaptation will always be Lizzie.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I get it, but that's part of why I like her.

I sometimes feel like people think the book is called Pride and That One Clever Girl Who Is Already Perfect Thank You Very Much. To me, and in my preferred interpretation/adaptations, Lizzie is used to being the smartest person in her circle. And that's partly because she kind of *is* but she gets a little full of herself and gives Jane some poor advice. She's our viewpoint character and we are heavily biased towards her, but she does develop and grow over the story.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. She's not supposed to be perfect.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - yes, but “not perfect” doesn’t necessarily mean smug either (omg, so much smirking. It’s basically her only facial expression). A person can and should be able to criticize the acting/directing choices made without being accused of expecting the character to be perfect.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
This is my pet peeve with people hating Emma. The whole POINT of Emma is that she is a fuck up with flaws who needs a figurative slap in the face to realize it. She's not supposed to be perfect.

Yes! And when she realises that she was spectacularly wrong about Wickham, and fairly wrong about Darcy*, it's genuinely a nasty shock which makes her realise she has to reassess, not just her assumptions about them, but her belief that she's always right.

In a way, she's quite like her father - she's charming and funny with just the right amount of edge to be compelling, and so it's easy to remain blind to her faults. Unlike Mr Bennet, she gets forced to reassess herself soon enough that it might stick.

* She's not wrong that he was behaving like an arrogant arse at the ball, but she allows that to blind her to the possibilities he might have good qualities as well.

Tangent: Seeing movies/tv from 20+ years ago makes me feel really good about my perfectly normal skin.

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
In the book one of the adjectives Austen used often to describe Lizzie in tone and mannerism is "arch" (which I love it), and it implies a sly playfulness that can definitely translate as smug. In modern parlance we'd be calling her "kinda a troll".

OP

(Anonymous) 2021-07-15 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I always considered it more playful and less smug and this adaption makes me feel like Elizabeth's an asshole and who wants to be around someone like that? And no, despite what is stated above in another comment, I don't expect her to be perfect. That's the whole point of the book.

DA - Me too.

I don't like here half smile. Not a fan of this adaptation overall for some reason.

I feel like Lizzie IS smug, and is more cutting than witty, which is why I think she originally gets on with Wickham. I think Lizzie needs to originally be just as "unlikable" as Darcy, and I'm not sure any adaption has really realized that because of protagonist/perspective bias.
