101: LOL! I'm sorry that happened but...LOL!

105: I don't know what show this is but I agree. Bisexuals have a hard enough time convincing people we exist without TV making it even harder. This isn't even the first show to do that.

110: Well in all fairness if the pic is related, Sakura's dad works his ass off to provide for his two children. I understand though. I'm jealous of kid's bedrooms on TV. I've never had a bedroom look that awesome.

122: *shrugs* I don't know why that's a big deal. I don't really see it as a mainstream thing that you just hear about like Batman or Spiderman or something.

124: Quack Pack and uh...that doesn't surprise me.

126: Aren't all countries considered the motherland, except Germany? That's the only one I've ever heard called "the fatherland".

129: I see what you did there.

133: Yeah me too. Well it's one of my main sources anyway. I have a couple others.

151: I don't think it helps your case that that looks really creepy. XD

153: So that's what happened to her. Oh and awwww that's an adorable idea!

154: I feel like I should comment on this but I'm not sure how. I...agree?

161: I now understand why you want to keep that secret. I don't think you should have to though. Good luck in your studies.

I don't think Great Britain or the USA were ever known as the motherland either.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The USA I can understand since we're kind of the country where most people are from somewhere else. Didn't know that about Great Britain though.

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure Colonial America used to call Britain the motherland. From which followed abusive parent metaphors in revolutionary literature.

I haven't heard Britain called the motherland, but we do have a female anthropomorphic personification of our country. She's called Britannia. She looks like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Britannia-Statue.jpg

So I wouldn't be surprised if most Britons identified Britain as female rather than male. Personally I'm vaguely surprised I can't think of a quote in which Britain is called 'she'.

[identity profile] train-diskense.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well America isn't referred to as the motherland but I've always heard America referred to with female pronouns so I've always seen America as female too. That's why Hetalia is kind of EH? for me. I just can't get into almost every single country being male.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the America thing was pointed out to me. Heh, I guess being here I just didn't consider myself, but yeah feminine pronouns and all. *shrugs* I don't know why the Hetalia creator made most of them male either, unless it was just easier for him.

[identity profile] train-diskense.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess it makes it easier if you're a male to make all male characters. Plus I get the feeling it's more martketable that way (Hetalia most certainly isn't aimed towards men. It's target audience is obviously women who like slashy subtext.)

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-02-14 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Yeah. Oh and I love your icon.

[identity profile] ember-reignited.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I agree so much and your icon is wonderful.

[identity profile] train-diskense.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I see some countries as male. America and Russia notsomuch.

:) Thank you. XD

[identity profile] graciebird.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Usually countries ARE referred to by feminine pronouns if not as outright mothers. This comes from the notion of a woman being stationary and waiting at home for you, something you return to from your wandering, manly journeys, the same way that a ship or a car is often also a "she" - wherever you lay your hat and all that. That being said, it's interesting that Germany was a really conspicuous fatherland - patriarchy gone wild! It'd be cool to go through the propaganda and history of certain countries and see if they considered themselves male or female and at what time.

I think Russia is referred most to as "the motherland" by it's citizens during it's Soviet Russia period. In days of yore, Canada used to refer to Britain as a mother, but I think that sort of thing has fallen out of fashion and comes from more of a colonial relationship. I don't know how many citizens refer to their own country as a mother outside of personal thoughts or poetry.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
That would actually be very interesting to see. I always found it interesting actually that America is referred to as she in songs and such but is personified as male "Uncle Sam", though in fairness he was a real guy.

Thanks for all the info actually it's very interesting. I never really understood why so many countries were "shes"

[identity profile] graciebird.livejournal.com 2009-02-15 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Totes! America would be interesting - not to mention the parallels between what a country is referred to and it's "mascot" (britannia, uncle sam, johnny canuck, etc.) And I didn't know Uncle Sam was a real guy! I'm getting more and more freaked by the second :)

Yup, born in Troy, NY, same city I was born in. They have a big to do every year to celebrate his birthday. His real name was Samuel Wilson and he was a meat packer.
